Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse - Travel/Contract

Location: North Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 6:45 AM – 7:15 PM (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each)
Weekend Requirement: Every third weekend


Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with Labor and Delivery specialty for a travel contract. The role requires strong clinical skills in newborn and maternal care, with experience in a Cerner EMR environment.


Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Missouri
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery nursing experience, with experience within the last year
  • One completed travel assignment
  • Experience with Cerner EMR
  • Certifications:
    • ACLS
    • BLS issued by American Heart Association
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
    • EFM (Electronic Fetal Monitoring)
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute)
    • AWHONN Intermediate

Clinical Skills Required

  • Administration of blood/products
  • Management of CVC/PICC lines and peripheral IVs
  • Medication administration including anticonvulsants, antihypertensives, heparin, insulin drips, magnesium sulfate therapy, oxytocin
  • Assistance with circumcision and circumcision care education
  • Car seat education, cord care, discharge teaching
  • IV antibiotics administration
  • Newborn assessment and care of neonatal abstinence syndrome
  • Pain management (opioids, epidural, PCA IV, pain assessment)
  • Baby-friendly protocols and couplet care
  • Incision care and isolation precautions
  • Phlebotomy and vaccine administration

  • Phototherapy
  • Teaching circumcision care to parents
  • Thermoregulation of newborns
  • Care of large for gestational age and low birth weight infants

Patient Ratio

  • 1 nurse to 3 patients

Facility & Compliance Requirements

  • Background Checks: Criminal background check covering all states/counties lived or worked in past 7 years, including OIG, SAM, EPLS/GSA, and Missouri/Kansas sex offender list
  • Health Requirements:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Negative TB test (2-step PPD, QGold, or TSPOT) within 1 year
    • 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (instant tests not accepted)
    • Flu vaccination required by November 1; approved medical or religious exemptions accepted with proper documentation
    • COVID vaccination required prior to start; facility-specific waiver form accepted in lieu
    • Fit mask testing onsite; must pass fit test (no facial hair allowed)
    • Immunizations:
      • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers for measles, mumps, rubella (2 boosters if low titer)
      • 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (1 booster if low titer)
      • Hepatitis B titer, series, or declination accepted (Aya requirement)
  • Facility Policies:
    • Safe Medication Administration Agreement required; failure to comply may result in contract termination
    • Dress code and artificial/natural nail policies enforced
  • Documentation:
    • Transcript or diploma required for education verification
    • 2 recent references and candidate application or resume required
    • Skills checklist required; medical-surgical skills accepted for rehab placements
    • MO EDL search required prior to start with digital signature verification

Training & Continuing Education

  • Annual proof of OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission training required (signed attestation or CORE testing acceptable)
  • CEU requirements vary by unit; for Med/Surg and Telemetry units, specific cardiac, stroke, and trauma CEUs are required and must be updated annually
  • NIH Stroke Certification required and must be updated annually
  • TNCC required for ED and ICU candidates (not specific to this role but noted for related units)

Additional Notes

  • Locals are allowed to apply at the same rate
  • No radius restrictions for travel nurses
  • Candidates must complete HealthStream modules during orientation period
  • Candidates must complete all required skills checklists and competencies during orientation week to remain compliant
