NICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Oakland, California
Shift: Day (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
Contract Length: 14 weeks


Job Summary

  • Provide nursing care in Level 3 & 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with additional Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) experience required.
  • Must be willing and able to float to other units and facilities as needed.
  • Pediatric experience is preferred.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Minimum 2 years of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) experience, with NICU experience within the last year.
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).

Compliance & Background Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start, including specific county and nationwide checks.
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start.
  • Education verification or copy of diploma/transcript required.
  • Drug testing: Standard 9-panel (excluding THC) within 30 days of start, re-run every 2 years.
  • Two supervisory references required from most recent or second most recent employer.
  • Current and updated resume covering last 7 years of work history; gaps of 30+ days must be explained.
  • Work history verification for 7 years required.
  • Unit-specific skills checklist updated annually.

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start including fitness to work statement signed by MD, DO, NP, APRN, or PA.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year of start; specific approved mask types required; annual update needed.
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years (declinations not accepted except medical exemptions).
  • Two negative TB tests required: one within 1 year and one within 3 months of start (PPD, QuantiFERON, or Tspot). Additional requirements for positive TB or allergies apply.
  • Annual TB questionnaire within 30 days of start.
  • Immunity or vaccination documentation required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
    • Varicella (IGG titer or 2 vaccines; history of disease not accepted)
  • Seasonal flu vaccine or facility-specific declination required during flu season (Nov-April).
  • COVID-19 vaccination is strongly recommended but not required as of current policy.

Training & Competency Requirements

  • Pass/Fail Telemetry exam on first day of orientation (3 attempts allowed).
  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher within 1 year of start.
  • Unit-specific competency exam with a passing score of 80% or higher within 12 months of start.
  • Core training parts I, II, and III with passing scores of 80% or higher, completed within 1 year prior to start and updated annually.
  • UCSF-specific learning modules must be completed before Day 1 for Tuesday starts; other start days complete during orientation.
  • Cyber Security Awareness Training and Quiz with passing score of 80% required annually.
  • HIPAA Healthcare Provider Module and Advanced HIPAA Module (for Nursing) with passing scores of 80% required.
  • Acknowledgement of Pass/Fail Testing required for all RNs.

Additional Information

  • Candidates must review and comply with COVID-19 preparedness updates and complete required questionnaires prior to start.
  • Parking and uniform information must be reviewed and acknowledged prior to start.
  • Candidates must complete emergency contact information.
  • Wage Benefit Parity form required pre-start for all clinical candidates.
