Job Summary
The Pathologist's Assistant provides services in Anatomic Pathology as part of a team under the supervision of a qualified Pathologist. Responsibilities include assisting in human post-mortem examinations and surgical specimen examinations.
Essential Functions
- Assist in preparation and performance of human surgical specimen examinations, including gross description, dissection, and selection/submission of tissue sections for microscopic examination (frozen and permanent).
- Accession specimens and ensure proper identification according to surgical pathology policies.
- Prepare containers and tissue cassettes.
- Provide technical training and credentialing support to residents; assess resident competency.
- Perform gross photography of specimens and maintain related files.
- Responsible for tumor procurement for biorepository and related documentation.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities, focusing on specimen identification, frozen sections, and maintenance of instruments and refrigerators.
- Manage inventory and ordering of supplies for frozen section room and surgical pathology lab.
- Select gross tissue and extremities for disposal after report finalization.
- Perform autopsies, including external examination, organ inspection, evisceration, dissection, tissue submission, and documentation.
- Assist with other related duties as assigned.
