Medical Technologist Travel Position

Location: Cortez, Colorado
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Summary

Perform and observe laboratory tests on patient specimens, accurately record results, and maintain laboratory equipment. Follow all policies, procedures, and safety regulations approved by the Laboratory Medical Director.


Work Schedule

  • Monday through Thursday
  • 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM
  • Approximately 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

  • Medical Technologist with at least 1 year of experience within the last year
  • Medical Laboratory Technician experience
  • National certification (ASCP or AMT) required
  • BLS certification
  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform testing and reporting in the following laboratory areas:
    • Chemistry: Maintain and operate clinical chemistry instruments; perform special chemistry tests
    • Hematology/Coagulation: Perform blood cell counts, coagulation studies, blood smear differentials, and manual cell counts on body fluids
    • Blood Banking: Manage blood inventory, verify blood groups, perform antibody screening, cross-matching, and maintain accurate records
    • Urinalysis: Perform microscopic evaluation of urine sediment and refer abnormal findings
    • Serology: Perform serological procedures per written protocols
    • Microbiology: Inoculate, cultivate, classify, and identify microorganisms; prepare and interpret gram stains and fungal preparations; document results and maintain quality control
  • Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Perform quality control procedures and maintain documentation
  • Receive, log, and prepare patient specimens for testing and reference labs
  • Perform phlebotomy using age-appropriate techniques and correct specimen collection procedures
  • Notify patient care units or physicians of critical test values
  • Ensure patient confidentiality and compliance with all regulatory, safety, and infection control policies
  • Participate in the laboratory Quality Management Program
  • Stock and order supplies as needed

Physical and Environmental Demands

  • Medium strength requirements: occasionally exert up to 50 lbs, frequently up to 20 lbs
  • Requires full range of motion including kneeling, crouching, reaching, and repetitive motions
  • Exposure to infectious waste, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and occasional foul odors
  • Moderate to occasionally loud noise levels; possible interactions with aggressive patients or visitors
  • Possible exposure to environmental elements such as heat, cold, precipitation, and wind
  • Visual demands include color vision and ability to focus at varying distances
  • Auditory demands include ability to hear and communicate clearly

Additional Information

  • Orientation includes direct supervision until competency is demonstrated
  • After orientation, independent performance of tests and reporting is allowed, with supervisor review of abnormal results
  • Adherence to dress code and professional appearance required
  • Completion of annual educational and regulatory requirements mandatory
  • Strong customer service and communication skills expected
  • Basic computer knowledge required
