Job Description

  • Variable shifts (day or night) with attempted block scheduling (typically 6 on, 8 off)
  • Must have strong independent skills
  • Must have 3+ years of experience in Emergency Department nursing
  • Facility prefers candidates who have completed 3 or more travel assignments (prior travel experience required)
  • Occasional floating to MS/Telemetry to assist other nurses; typically do not take own patients
  • Must have triage experience and be comfortable with conscious sedation
  • Will consider travelers from all trauma levels; critical access experience preferred

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) preferred

Department & Patient Information

  • Trauma Level: Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
  • STEMI Receiving: Yes (stabilize and transfer out STEMIs and strokes)
  • Beds: 8 beds in ER
  • No designated triage nurse; any nurse in the department can triage using the ESI triage model
  • No separate holding area; hold patients kept in the ED
  • 2 designated safe rooms for psych patients with 24/7 security rounding every 15 minutes
  • Security is in-house 24/7 and rounds throughout the hospital
  • Average patient volume: ~30 patients/day (700/month)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity and census
  • Common diagnoses: cardiac issues (arrhythmias, STEMIs, NSTEMIs, HTN, CHF), strokes/post-strokes, traumas (MVAs, falls), orthopedic cases, GI issues, ETOH, overdoses, COPD, and more
  • Patient population: 25% pediatric, adults, large Hispanic population

Clinical Responsibilities & Support

  • Common drips: all critical drips and sedation (including ketamine) for bedside procedures
  • ED Physician/Mid-levels: 1 ED physician onsite per 24-hour shift
  • Charge nurse available as a resource; manager assists with triage when needed
  • No CNAs in ED; primary care nursing model; travelers may assist with precepting nursing, EMT, and paramedic students
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) in ER 24/7; nurses may assist with respiratory equipment and treatments
  • Nurses responsible for troubleshooting respiratory equipment (NC, High Flow, CPAP, BiPAP, trachs, vents)
  • No monitor techs; nurses read and interpret telemetry themselves
  • X-ray/CT available nearby; nurses accompany critical patients during transport
  • RN responsible for lab draws upon IV starts; phlebotomy available if needed

Scheduling & Work Environment

  • Shifts: 12-hour shifts (6am-6pm or 6pm-6am); no mid shifts
  • Schedule typically block style but flexibility required to fill gaps
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend or 1-2 weekends per month
  • Holiday requirement: every other holiday rotation; may be asked to work holidays
  • No call or standby requirement
  • ED staff part of Rapid Response Team; may be asked to respond to RRTs and codes in hospital
  • Scrub color: Navy Blue
  • Orientation: 1 day general orientation + 1-2 days with preceptor
