Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - MedSurg Level 8 - 23

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Required Experience & Certifications

• Minimum 1 year of MedSurg nursing experience (highest requirement found)
• BLS Certification and valid RN License required
• First-time travel nurses are accepted (no prior travel experience required)

Unit & Patient Information

• Unit Type: Medical-Surgical
• Number of Beds: 48
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • Day shift: 1:5-7
  • Night shift: 1:6-8
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Pneumonia, UTI, AMS (Altered Mental Status), GI bleed, Alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Titrate drips (except cardiac drip titration) including heparin, bumex, lasix
• Vital signs, blood glucose monitoring (BGM), EKGs, applying heart monitors
• Patient care tasks: bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning
• Monitor respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high flow O2) but respiratory therapists handle treatments and checks
• Nurses are not required to interpret telemetry strips; monitor techs handle this

Staffing & Scheduling

• Charge Nurse coverage:

  • 2 charge nurses on day shift who take patient assignments
  • Night shift charge nurse may or may not take assignments depending on staffing
• Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech (PCT) ratio: approximately 1:10-12
• Shifts: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm for RNs; 6am-6pm for CNAs
• No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule managed by nurse manager
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend
• Holiday requirement: may be asked to participate in holiday rotation (RNs rotate; PCTs work if scheduled)
• No call or standby requirement
• Floating required: may float to other MedSurg, MedSurg-Telemetry, or Intermediate Care units for lower acuity patients

Orientation & Training

• Unit-specific orientation: 1 day educator/computer system training + 1 day preceptor
• Orientation includes night and weekend shifts as scheduled

Additional Notes

• Must provide a copy of an unexpired driver’s license with submission
• Licensing issues must be disclosed upfront
• Dress code:

  • RN scrubs: Navy blue
  • PCT scrubs: Ceil blue
  • Secretaries: Black and pink
• PCT class available for those interested in becoming a Patient Care Technician or CNA

This position offers a structured environment with clear expectations for experience, certifications, and flexibility in scheduling. It is suitable for nurses with at least one year of MedSurg experience, including those new to travel nursing.
