Cardio Thoracic Unit - RN Opportunity
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Unit: Cardio Thoracic (70 beds)
Contract Length
- 18 weeks
Patient Care & Unit Details
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient types/diagnoses:
- MI, CHF, A fib, COPD
- Pacemaker/AICD placement
- Lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy - not fresh from PACU)
- General medical overflow
- Common drips titrated: Cardizem, heparin
- RN responsibilities:
- Titrate drips
- EKG interpretation and medication titration
- Read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
- Support staff:
- Patient Care Techs (PCT) ratios:
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Tele/Monitor techs present
- Charge nurse 24/7 (rarely takes patients)
- House supervisor 24/7
Required Certifications & Skills
- RN licensure (active Illinois license or application in process)
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS recommended
- EKG interpretation skills
- Basic nursing skills
Equipment & Procedures
- Respiratory equipment: CPAP, BiPAP (used if part of patient’s home regimen)
- Heated high flow oxygen used only in special COVID cases
- RNs troubleshoot respiratory equipment as needed
Scheduling & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts:
- Days: 0700-1930
- Nights: 1900-0730
- Weekend requirements: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday rotation required:
- Days: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
- Nights: Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one, depending on prior OSF experience
- Scrub color/dress code: Any color except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
- Call/standby: Not required currently
- Drug-free campus: Negative drug screen required
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- OSF call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay required for shift
