ICU Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg ICU

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
• Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
• Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department specific orientation
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Every other or as needed based on unit needs
• Floating: Will float to all inpatient units except Maternity/NICU
• Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs

  • ICU: 1:1-2
  • PCU: 1:4-5
  • Med Surg: 1:5-6
• Charge Nurse: Yes, attends RRTs and Codes and takes assignment
• Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio 1:18
• Telemetry: No tele/monitor techs; RNs must read and interpret Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry
• Respiratory Equipment: RNs troubleshoot nasal cannula to vents

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
• Neuro surgery (including thrombectomy program) – experience not required
• Respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke
• Cardiogenic shock (Impella, balloon pump) – experience not required
• Renal failure (CRRT) – experience not required
• General surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds
• Cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy, internal chemo administration)

Clinical Responsibilities

• Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
• Drip Titration: Yes
• Common Drips: Vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, antiarrhythmics
• Equipment Used: CVPs, Arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
• Other Equipment: Zoll Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol, Bell Mont rapid transfuser

Additional Requirements & Notes

• Must have a valid driver’s license at submittal (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
• Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
• Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
• RN must pass a Friday orientation exam (open book, 90% required to pass) or face termination
• Fast-paced unit with volume fluctuations as a primary tertiary hospital
• Successful nurses are those who ask questions, have a positive attitude, willingness to help, critical thinking skills, and are personable
• Team environment working closely with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers
• Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
