ICU Registered Nurse (RN) - Med Surg ICU
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 12-hour shifts (0630-1830, 1830-0630)
- Hours Guaranteed: 36 hours per week
- Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department specific orientation
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: Every other or as needed based on unit needs
- Floating: Will float to all inpatient units except Maternity/NICU
- Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs
Unit Information
- Department: Med Surg ICU
- Number of Beds: 34
- Nurse:Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1-2
- PCU: 1:4-5
- Med Surg: 1:5-6
- Charge Nurse: Yes, attends RRTs and Codes and takes assignment
- Nurse Aids/Patient Care Techs: Yes, ratio 1:18
- Telemetry: No tele/monitor techs; RNs must read and interpret Draeger heart monitoring with centralized telemetry
- Respiratory Equipment: RNs troubleshoot nasal cannula to vents
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Adults and pediatrics over 15 years old
- Neuro surgery (including thrombectomy program) – experience not required
- Respiratory failure, ARDS, MODS, sepsis, stroke
- Cardiogenic shock (Impella, balloon pump) – experience not required
- Renal failure (CRRT) – experience not required
- General surgery, psych/OD, GI bleeds
- Cancer-specific surgeries (e.g., esophagectomy, internal chemo administration)
Clinical Responsibilities
- Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Drip Titration: Yes
- Common Drips: Vasopressors, paralytics, narcotics, sedation, antiarrhythmics
- Equipment Used: CVPs, Arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, EV-1000, ICP monitoring (training provided)
- Other Equipment: Zoll Thermoguard for hypothermia protocol, Bell Mont rapid transfuser
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Must have a valid driver’s license at submittal (used to verify candidate is within 50 miles radius)
- Candidates may not be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care departments; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
- RN must pass a Friday orientation exam (open book, 90% required to pass) or face termination
- Fast-paced unit with volume fluctuations as a primary tertiary hospital
- Successful nurses are those who ask questions, have a positive attitude, willingness to help, critical thinking skills, and are personable
- Team environment working closely with attendings, fellows, residents, and student providers
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
