Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)
Location: Yuma, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
A hospital in Southern Arizona is seeking Registered Nurses for a 13-week assignment in the Emergency Room (ER) unit. The ER operates as a Level 3 trauma center but functions like a Level 1, receiving STEMI and stroke patients (stroke interventions are transferred out). The unit treats approximately 200 patients per day with 52 beds including 4 trauma bays and 6 fast track beds.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of recent ER experience in a Level I or II trauma center within the past 3 years (Level III or Critical Access Hospital experience not accepted)
- Current certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS, NIHSS (TNCC preferred)
- Proficiency with Epic EMR and recent use required
- Ability to read telemetry independently (monitor tech support available)
Shift & Scheduling Details
- Shift: 1pm – 1am (start date fixed, no flexibility)
- Varied shift start times available: 7am, 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 3pm
- Modified self-scheduling with no blocked scheduling requests
- Weekend requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week block
- Holiday requirement: Typically 2 shifts out of 5 (including eves)
- No more than 5 days of Return to Office (RTO) allowed
- 100-mile radius travel rule applies
Unit & Patient Care Information
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:5 for medical patients, 1:6 for fast track
- Separate fast track area with 6 beds
- Triage uses Emergency Severity Index (ESI) with two quick-look areas
- ER holds are intermixed within the ER (no separate holding area)
- No seclusion rooms for psychiatric patients
- Security present in ER 24/7
- Common patient types: All emergency cases
- Common drips: ICU-level drips for hold patients (ICU support available)
- ED staffed by physicians, mid-level providers, and pediatric board-certified providers on varied shifts
- No charge nurse on shift; House Supervisor available for assistance
- Support staff includes experienced ED techs (EKG, vitals, blood draws, splints) and patient care assistants
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7 for ABGs, nebulizer treatments, ventilators, CPAP
- RT equipment includes Glidescope, Hamilton and Phillips ventilators
- Dedicated CT and X-ray in ER with transport team; RN accompanies critical patients
- Labs drawn by ED techs or RNs (no phlebotomists)
Orientation & Training
- One day New Employee Orientation (NEO)
- One day clinical/EPIC training
- One day on-floor orientation
Uniform
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
Additional Notes
- Floating: Shared schedule with nearby freestanding ER, typically scheduled ahead of time with infrequent last-minute floating
- RN must be able to read telemetry independently, monitor tech support available
