Registered Nurse – Cardio Thoracic Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Cardio Thoracic
- Beds: 70
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Types: MI, CHF, A fib, COPD, pacemaker/AICD placement, lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy not fresh from PACU), general medical overflow
Shift Details
- Shift Length: 12 hours
- Shift Times:
- Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- Nights: 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday Requirement: Rotating schedule including major holidays and eves
- Call/Standby: None at this time
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license (or application in process)
- BLS certification (AHA) required
- ACLS certification recommended
- Experience with EKG interpretation and medication titration
- Ability to titrate drips (mainly Cardizem and heparin)
- Basic nursing skills appropriate for critical care
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
Unit Specific Information
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage, rarely takes patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Patient Care Tech Ratios:
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP (used if part of patient’s home regimen), heated high flow in special COVID cases; RNs troubleshoot as needed
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one, depending on prior experience at the facility
- Dress Code: Any scrub color allowed except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
Experience Requirements
- Specialty Experience: Cardio Thoracic nursing experience preferred (implied by unit specialty and skills required)
- Prior travel experience: Not specified or required
This position is ideal for an experienced RN with critical care skills in cardiothoracic nursing, comfortable with telemetry, medication titration, and working in a fast-paced, adult critical care environment.
