Registered Nurse (RN) – Acute Care Unit
Location
- Peoria, Illinois
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
Contract Length
- 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Acute Care Unit with 29 beds (typical census 22-26, target 25)
- Mixture of private and semi-private rooms
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Days: 4-5 patients per nurse
- Nights: 5-6 patients per nurse
- Patient population includes a wide range of medical diagnoses such as GI bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, CHF, COVID, comfort care, osteomyelitis, elderly patients with falls, DVT, and pulmonary embolisms
- Patients may leave for surgery or procedures and return to the unit
Work Schedule
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
- 36 hours per week
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Friday/Saturday for night shift)
- Holiday rotation applies
- No call or standby requirements
Orientation
- 2 shifts of unit-specific orientation
- 12 non-billable orientation hours
Required Certifications and Licenses
- Active Illinois RN license or proof that application process has been initiated
- BLS certification
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs are required to titrate drips (Heparin only)
- Expected to attempt IV starts; inpatient phlebotomy team available if unsuccessful
- Patients may require oxygen up to 6L NC, stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or PRN
- No ventilator patients on the unit
- Telemetry monitoring is done remotely by a telemetry department; RNs do not read their own strips
- Unit uses Phillips telemetry equipment
Staffing and Support
- 24-hour Charge RN coverage; charge nurse is generally free of patient assignment
- 24-hour Crisis RN coverage and administrative supervisor available 24/7
- 24-hour Patient Care Technician (PCT) coverage with a ratio of 1:10
- Unit clerk (PCL) with 24-hour coverage
Floating and Other Requirements
- Travel RNs are first to float as needed to other med/surg-like units
- No ICU or chemotherapy patient care required
- Scrub color: any color allowed; staff must provide their own scrubs (no pediatric scrubs)
Additional Notes
- Drug-free campus policy; negative drug screen required for all panels
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
This position is suitable for RNs with experience in acute care medical units who are comfortable managing a variety of medical diagnoses, titrating heparin drips, and working night shifts with weekend and holiday rotations.
