Registered Nurse (ER/MedSurg) - Nebraska

Job Overview

• Work on a med/surg floor caring for acutely ill patients and patients in swing beds.
• Opportunity to float to the ER if you have ER experience and certifications.
• No OB services.
• Typical nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2-3 depending on census.
• Night shift position, 12-hour shifts (7p-7a), approximately 36 hours per week.
• Schedule created by manager; block scheduling preferred but not guaranteed.
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend.
• Holiday shifts required as needed, typically one or two during holiday season.
• No ventilator management; stabilize and transfer patients requiring vents.
• Must be able to read and interpret telemetry strips; no monitor tech on site.
• No visible tattoos or piercings allowed.

Patient Population and Environment

• Rural hospital setting.
• Common cases include farm accidents, orthopedic injuries, kidney stones, flu, and other ER/MedSurg diagnoses.
• Staffed with 3 nurses on day shift and 3 on night shift.
• Charge nurse assigned only on day shift.
• Nurse aides support unit with clerical and patient care functions during day and evening shifts.
• Respiratory therapy available 6:45am-4pm M-F; nursing staff covers treatments and BiPAP/CPAP setup after hours and weekends.
• Pharmacy available 7am-4:30pm M-F; remote pharmacy support after hours and weekends, requiring nurses to mix medications during those times.
• MD on call at night for hospital and ED; no dedicated ER physician always on site.
• Primary care physicians round on patients; rotating physicians cover nights and weekends.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years nursing experience.
• Critical access hospital experience required.
• Prior travel experience preferred.
• ACLS and BLS certifications required.
• PALS and TNCC certifications preferred.
• Strong critical thinking skills and ability to work as a team player.
• Ability to manage drips and read cardiac monitors (Mindray).
• Comfortable working both ER and MedSurg as needed.
• Experience with Healthland EMR, Omnicell medication dispensing system, and Plum IV pumps preferred.

Additional Information

• Contract length: 13 weeks.
• Shift: Nights (7p-7a).
• No IV team; nurses manage IV pumps.
• Supportive staff and community environment.
