Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse for a mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with med-surg and telemetry patients. The unit cares for patients with respiratory and cardiac conditions, including COVID-19 positive patients.

Required Qualifications

Specialty: Registered Nurse (PCU)
Minimum Years of Experience: 2 years (higher value confirmed)
Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
Skills:
- IV starts
- Ventilator care (chronic trach/vent patients, max 1 vent patient per nurse)
- Telemetry monitoring
- CPAP/BiPAP management
- Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
Float Requirement: Must float to like units
Weekend Requirement: Minimum 4 weekend shifts in 6 weeks (may require more based on staffing)
Shift: 12-hour day shifts
Patient Population: COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, chest tubes, respiratory distress, COVID-19, flu, pulmonary embolisms
Unit Acuity: Higher end of med-surg acuity with 48 beds; CNA ratio 9-10:1; nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:4-5, can go to 1:6 in extreme situations
Orientation: 24 hours
Scrubs: Not provided; white or navy blue recommended
Additional Requirements: Must pass EKG competency testing prior to start

Chest tubes
Drips including dopamine, Cardizem, heparin
Ventilators, trachs, BiPAP/CPAP

Scheduling

Block scheduling available when unit needs are met
Maximum 7 days of RTO (Return to Office) allowed for auto offers

Required Health & Compliance Documents

Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (or proof of past positive with documentation)
Immunizations: Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, Hepatitis B
Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
Drug screening (9-panel) within 6 months of start
Physical exam (per travel agency standards)
Background checks within 6 months
Medication and pharmacology competency exams
Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (must pass with 82% or higher within 72 hours of start)
Color blindness testing within 1 year
Various facility-specific compliance and orientation trainings (e.g., bloodborne pathogens, medication safety, confidentiality, hospital policies)

Additional Notes

Unit accepts 13-week contracts
Target nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-5, with a max of 1 vent patient per nurse
Patient care includes COVID-19 positive patients
Float to similar units required
Weekend shifts required as per staffing needs
Must complete all required certifications and competency exams prior to or shortly after start date

This position is ideal for RNs with med-surg and telemetry experience who are comfortable managing higher acuity patients and ventilators in a PCU setting. First-time travel nurses are welcome to apply.
