Job Description

  • Desired start date: 02/23
  • Preferred 1-2 years Med/Surg experience
  • Must have Michigan RN license
  • BLS (AHA) required
  • NIHSS certification required or willingness to complete prior to start
  • Work every other weekend
  • May float to other Med/Surg units, ICU units, and ED waiting rooms
  • Night shift ratios: 1:5-6, no LPN on nights
  • Charge nurse duties vary based on staffing
  • Equipment used: EPIC, Pyxis

About the Unit

  • 40-bed medical surgical unit specializing in neurological disorders (Stroke, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, inflammatory brain/spinal cord disorders)
  • Large spinal surgery population including post-op neuro-surgery, ortho-surgery, laminectomy, spinal fusion patients
  • Includes six step-down/telemetry beds and six bariatric beds
  • Four-bed Neuro Monitoring Unit admitting seizure patients starting at age 5

Required Experience

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse (Medical Surgical)
  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years (preferred 1-2 years Med/Surg, default to higher requirement)
  • Prior travel experience: Not explicitly required

Certifications & Competencies

  • BLS (AHA) - Required
  • NIH Stroke Certification (AHA, APEX, Bluecloud) - Must be updated annually
  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA only) - Required for ED and RRTs if applicable
  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (AHA only) - Required if working in Pediatrics or ED
  • NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure - Required if working in Pediatrics
  • TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course - Required for ED
  • EFM - Electronic Fetal Monitoring - As applicable
  • CPI - Crisis Prevention Institute - As applicable
  • ENPC - Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course - As applicable
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam - Completed within 1 year prior to assignment with passing score ≥80%
  • Competency Exam in specialty - Completed within 1 year prior to assignment with passing score ≥80%
  • Orientation Safety Manual Acknowledgement - Required

Licensure

  • Michigan RN license required
  • Primary source online verification required

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal background check within 45 days of start, including lifetime search from age 18
  • Monthly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • MI LARA fingerprinting required within 45 days of start for certain positions (not specifically required for this role unless specified)
  • Education verification (copy of highest degree or diploma)
  • Michigan Central Registry Clearance required for pediatric and certain specialty placements (not specifically required here)

Health & Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask testing (Honeywell DC365N95HC) required on-site for acute care roles
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap: Proof of at least 1 prior Tdap vaccine required
  • Negative TB test (PPD or Q Gold/Tspot) within 30 days of start; if positive, chest x-ray and TB questionnaire required annually
  • TB Questionnaire updated annually
  • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; exemptions not accepted
  • Hepatitis B: Titer, series, or facility declination required
  • Varicella: 2 vaccines or positive titer required; exemptions not accepted
  • Drug testing: 10-panel including Marijuana/THC within 30 days of start; no exceptions
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved exemption required for candidates starting after 11/1; proof or exemption must be submitted by 12/1

  • Complete application/resume with full 7 years work history, no gaps, dated MM/YYYY
  • One professional reference from supervisor/manager required

  • Candidate may be asked to float to other units including ICU and ED waiting rooms
