Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PICU) - Travel/Contract
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Unit: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Shift: 3x12 hour shifts, rotating primarily days (2 months days 7a-7:30p / 1 month nights 7p-7:30a)
- Weekend Requirement:
- Days: 4 weekend shifts per schedule (including Saturdays and Sundays)
- Nights: Up to 5 weekend shifts per schedule (including Fri/Sat/Sun)
- On-call: Not required
- Patient Ratios: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 (mixed ICU and Stepdown patients)
- Floating: Clinician will float within scope to meet facility needs
Experience & Licensure Requirements
- Specialty: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse
- Years of Experience Required: Minimum 2 years PICU experience
- Prior Travel Experience: Not required; first-time travelers accepted
- Preferred Experience: ECMO, CRRT
- Licensure: South Carolina RN license or Multi-State/Compact RN license
- Certifications Required:
- BLS (American Heart Association only)
- PALS (American Heart Association only)
Unit Description
- 28-bed unit providing intensive and intermediate care for children ages 0-18
- Patient diagnoses include respiratory compromise, trauma, post-operative surgical care, neurology/neurosurgery
- Advanced therapies provided: ventilatory and cardiac support, ECMO, CRRT, renal/peritoneal dialysis
- Pediatric palliative care available as needed
- Staffing includes RNs, Patient Care Technicians, Unit Secretaries, with support from Respiratory Therapy, Pediatric Dietitians, and Pediatric Pharmacists

Scheduling & Other Requirements
- Block scheduling possible with manager approval, dependent on unit needs
- Local radius: 60 miles; locals accepted on a case-by-case basis
- Facility may call off 1 shift per 2 weeks
- Hurricane season (June-November) may require assignment to emergency response teams
Required Documentation & Compliance
- Licensure Verification: Primary source verification required; SC RN license or compact license accepted
- Background Checks:
- Annual background check covering all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
- Includes SSN trace, state and national criminal checks, sex offender registry, FACIS 3, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Education Verification: Required; diploma or transcripts accepted as placeholder if needed
- References: Proof of 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations
- Employment History: Verification of last 3 clinical employers required
- Physical Exam: Initial and annual physical exam attesting ability to meet job demands
- Drug Testing: 10-panel drug screen within 90 days of start (no instant tests)
- Fit Mask Test: N95 fit test within 90 days prior to start, renewed annually (specific mask models required)
- Vaccinations & Titers:
- Tdap within 10 years or declination form
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Varicella: Positive titer or vaccination series with boosters as needed
- Hepatitis B: Titer, vaccine series, or declination required
- Flu vaccine required during flu season (Aug 1 - Apr 30), medical/religious exemptions accepted (no declinations)
- COVID vaccines highly preferred; declination form required if not vaccinated
- TB Testing: T-spot or Q-Gold within 90 days of start; annual TB questionnaire required
- Competency Exams: Medication/pharmacology competency and general competency exams required
- Photo for Badge: Clear, passport-style photo with solid light background, business casual attire, no hats or sunglasses
Certifications (Additional Notes)
- ACLS not required for pediatric units
- TNCC not required for ER RNs
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification required (AHA/AAP only)
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) certification not required for NICU
Orientation & Training
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules required prior to start (approx. 2 hours)
- Modules must be completed on a computer, not a mobile device
- COVID and flu vaccination documentation must be uploaded into facility system prior to start
Additional Notes
- Facility requires submission of all requested documentation at time of application
- Approval of requested time off (RTO) is based on unit needs and must be submitted with application
- Facility may accommodate block scheduling with manager approval
- Travelers should be aware of potential emergency response assignments during hurricane season (June-November)
This position is ideal for PICU RNs with at least 2 years of experience, who hold the required licenses and certifications, and are comfortable working rotating shifts with weekend requirements in a high-acuity pediatric critical care environment.
