Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical Unit (Med Surg)

Location: New York, NY
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse provides safe, competent, quality care to a designated group of patients and their families on a Medical Surgical Unit. Care is delivered based on nursing theory, research, evidence-based practice, and organizational standards.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and the nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
  • Manage assignments within the Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

  • Role model Relationship Centered Care practices such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, and Discharge Wrap Up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Address patient and family concerns and escalate as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills essential to quality and safety.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Follow institutional protocols to avoid high-risk behaviors and ensure a safe environment.
  • Document nursing practice accurately to support quality and performance initiatives.

Operations

  • Perform charge nurse duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate supply and inventory management with nursing leadership.
  • Escalate material or staffing shortages appropriately.
  • Promote cost-effective patient care resource utilization.
  • Facilitate patient throughput during shifts.

Professional Development

  • Support clinical colleagues, patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Advance clinical competence from novice to expert.
  • Maintain a professional image and communicate with caring and respect.
  • Apply ethical principles in decision-making.
  • Encourage lifelong learning, scholarship, and innovation.
  • Participate in specialty practice councils, nursing committees, and unit initiatives.

Requirements

  • Licensure: NYS Registered Nurse (RN) License required
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years RN experience
    • Minimum 2 years Medical Surgical (Med/Surg) experience
  • Travel Experience: 1 year travel experience required for travel positions (not required for per diem)
  • Certifications: BLS required
  • Preferred: EPIC experience highly preferred
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate degree considered with relevant experience or active enrollment in a BSN program

Work Schedule and Unit Details

  • Unit Size: 34 beds
  • Average Census: 30 patients
  • Staffing Ratio: 1 nurse to 5 patients
  • Schedule: 3x12 hour shifts, including every other weekend and holidays
