Registered Nurse (Stepdown Care Unit) - Peoria, Illinois
Job Details
- Specialty: Stepdown Care Unit (Intermediate Care)
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: Days (12-hour shifts, 7am–7pm)
- Hours per Week: 36 hours
- Unit Size: 20 beds (8 private, remainder semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 3:1
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Fri/Sat night shift, Sat/Sun day shift)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday rotation, including companion day on major holidays
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Travel RNs float first; may float to ICU (if experienced), Stepdown, or General Medicine units with adjusted patient loads (ICU 2 patients, Stepdown 3 patients, Gen Med 5-6 patients)
- Orientation: 3 days total (1 day EPIC, 1 day unit orientation with educator, 1 day floor orientation with RN)
- Dress Code: Any color scrubs
Patient Population & Care
- Care for patients with a wide range of medical conditions including:
- COPD, CHF, Diabetes Mellitus, Sepsis, Renal issues, DKA, Alcohol withdrawal, Overdoses, Pneumonia, Respiratory conditions
- Some neuro, surgical, and cardiac patients
- Common equipment and interventions:
- BiPAP, CPAP, face mask ventilators
- Tracheostomies and trached patients on ventilators
- Chest tubes, G-tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, central lines
Clinical Responsibilities
- Must titrate drips including Cardene, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Heparin, and low-dose/infrequent vasopressors
- RNs confirm telemetry strips interpreted by Tele/Monitor Techs (Phillips monitors)
- Charge nurse present on each shift (usually free of patient assignment unless staffing is low)
- House supervisor available 24/7
- Two Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) per shift, each caring for up to 10 patients when unit is full
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Stepdown (1 year of experience)
- Stepdown experience within the last year
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Tracheostomy and ventilator experience
- Experience titrating drips (Cardene, Cardizem, Amio, Dobutamine, Heparin, and Vasopressors)
- ICU - Intensive Care Unit experience
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius of the facility
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (do not count toward guaranteed hours)
- Call-off policy allows up to 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
