Job Opportunity: 2N Observation - Medsurg and Cardiac Observation (Cost Center 32)
Location: Parkersburg, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Unit Type: 2N - Medsurg and Cardiac Observation
- Beds: 21 beds (usually staffed for 18)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Average 1:6
- Nurse Aide Ratio: Typically 1:10, sometimes 1:14-15 depending on census and staffing
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage; Day Charge sometimes takes patients, Night Charge always takes patients
- Tele/Monitor Techs: Present on the 3rd floor; RNs must be able to read and interpret cardiac strips with real-time monitor viewing on the unit
Required Certifications
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
Patient Population / Common Diagnoses
- Pre/post cardiac catheterization
- Chest pain rule-outs on heparin drips
- COPD, CHF
- Pacemakers, arrhythmias
- Various MedSurg diagnoses
Experience & Skills Required
- Ability to read cardiac strips
- Experience with set-rate Cardizem and Amiodarone drips
- Experience with TR Bands is a significant plus (please confirm during prescreen)
- RNs are not required to titrate drips; only set-rate Cardizem and Amiodarone are used regularly
- Occasional use of Bumex and Lasix drips
Respiratory Equipment
- Bipap and Cpap for supportive therapy only
- No High Flow oxygen therapy on this unit
- Patients dependent on Bipap or Cpap likely transferred to higher acuity units
Scheduling & Shifts
- 12-hour shifts: 7am-7pm and 7pm-7am
- Clock-in times: no earlier than 6:53am or 6:53pm
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend for travelers (permanent staff work every 3rd weekend)
- Night weekend shifts: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
- Day weekend shifts: Saturday, Sunday
- Holiday Requirement: Travelers may be required to work holidays if unit needs demand it
- Time off requests must be made upfront and included in the contract; later requests require facility approval
Additional Work Expectations
- Call or standby shifts are rare but possible, depending on census
- Travelers are typically the first to float and may be floated anywhere in the hospital, including ICU and Stepdown units, but only assigned patients within their skillset
Orientation
- 1 day of computer training
- 1 day shadowing on the floor with a preceptor
- On their own starting the 3rd day
Dress Code
- Royal blue scrubs
- Scrub jackets optional but must be actual scrub jackets (no hoodies or sweatshirts)
Work Environment
- Busy and fast-paced unit
- Can discharge up to 6 patients per day and admit 6+ patients
- Epic electronic health record system used
- Weekend work as needed
