Registered Nurse - MCU / Multi Care Unit

Location: Prescott Valley, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit Overview

• Multi Care Unit with combined acuity levels (ICU, PCU, Med Surg) within one unit
• Unit size: 10 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratios vary by acuity:

  • ICU: 1:2
  • PCU: 1:4
  • Med Surg (MST): 1:5-6 (or 1:3 if no nurse aide available)
• Nurse aides typically care for 10-15 patients; if no aide, RN provides primary care to PCU & MST patients

Patient Types / Common Diagnoses

• Medical ICU: Sepsis, suicide attempts, drug or alcohol withdrawal, COPD, respiratory arrest, pneumonia, COVID-19, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), abnormal blood pressure or heart rate, post-op complications
• PCU: Patients on non-titratable infusions to maintain heart rate or blood pressure

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• Must pass dysrhythmia exam with at least 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 2 years ICU experience preferred
• Candidates with 1 year ICU plus 1 year PCU or Med Surg experience from larger facilities may be considered if skills are strong

Clinical Skills / Responsibilities

• RNs are required to titrate drips (sedation, vasopressors, insulin)
• Must be competent in 12-lead EKG interpretation and bedside cardiac monitoring
• Respiratory therapy support available for vents, BiPAP, CPAP
• Remote monitor technicians support PCU & Med Surg patients
• Charge Nurse oversees 50 inpatient beds including MST, Pediatrics, and MCU

Scheduling & Work Conditions

• 12-hour shifts: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:30 PM – 7:30 AM
• Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Fri/Sat nights, Sat/Sun days)
• Holiday rotation to ensure fair distribution
• Standby/call rotation during low census periods

Floating Requirements

• Float to Emergency Care, Med Surg, and Pediatric units for adult MST patients
• Float to a nearby campus ICU and PCU to maintain competency
• Two-hour notice given before floating
• May float to pediatric unit with adult assignments

Additional Information

• Scrub color: any except camouflage
• Orientation includes hospital and unit-specific training
• Radius rule: candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN at certain affiliated facilities within the past year
• Cannot have worked permanently at certain affiliated facilities within the last 12 months

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse license in Arizona
• BLS and ACLS certifications
• Minimum 2 years ICU experience (or 1 year ICU + 1 year PCU/Med Surg with strong skills)
• Must pass dysrhythmia exam prior to contract signing
