Registered Nurse (Med Surg Ortho Trauma)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts)
Hours per Week: 36 hours guaranteed
Unit & Patient Population
- Unit Type: Medical-Surgical / Telemetry / Orthopedics (4th Floor North & South)
- Number of Beds: 55
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:5-6
- Common Diagnoses: Joint replacements, fractures, colon resections, COPD exacerbation, prostatectomy, cellulitis, sepsis, ortho trauma, GI bleeds, pneumonia, failure to thrive
- Patient Diversity: Includes Spanish, Karen, Burmese cultures
Job Responsibilities & Environment
- RNs required to titrate drips: Heparin, lidocaine, ketamine
- Common drips: PCA pumps
- Charge Nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs available (ratio approx. 1:10-20)
- Telemetry Techs interpret monitors; RNs should have tele awareness but do not read strips themselves
- Floating required to other MedSurg areas or units with MedSurg patients waiting for beds
- Mechanical lifts available in every other room
- Focus on hourly rounding and responsiveness
- High patient turnover with multiple admissions and discharges daily
- Success factors: good attendance, teamwork, compassion, patient-centered care
Scheduling & Orientation
- Shifts: 0630-1900 (day) and 1830-0700 (night); this posting is for nights
- Scheduling: Travelers are scheduled; limited block scheduling allowed
- Weekend Requirement: Typically every other weekend, with possible additional coverage based on demand
- Holiday Requirement: 2-3 holidays between Thanksgiving and New Year’s
- Orientation: 2 shifts of unit/department-specific orientation
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license for Nebraska
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS preferred
- Must pass a 90% score on a pass/fail open book exam during orientation (exam covers skills learned)
- Driver’s license required at submission to verify distance compliance
Additional Requirements & Policies
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and may not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with certain large healthcare systems
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
- Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Scrub Color: Navy blue for RNs
