Job Opportunity: Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (L&D RN)
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
Seeking an experienced Labor & Delivery RN to provide care in a high-volume OB unit with a focus on both routine and high-risk obstetric patients. The role requires circulating in the OR, competency in newborn assessments, and occasional floating to Postpartum and sitter duties.
Unit Details
- Labor & Delivery Beds: 16 labor rooms, 9 antepartum rooms
- OR Suites for C-Sections: 3
- Triage Beds: 7 (for patients >20 weeks pregnant with complaints)
- Postpartum Beds: 36
- Births: Up to 400 per month
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios (AWHONN guidelines):
- Labor: 1:1-2
- Antepartum: 1:2-3
- Charge Nurse present on both shifts and takes assignments
- Support Staff: 2 OB Technicians per shift
- OB/Neonatologist Coverage: 3 residents + 1 supervising MD on floor 24/7
- Anesthesia: CRNAs on unit 24/7
- Respiratory Equipment: Nasal cannula troubleshooting only for RNs
- Telemetry: Tele monitoring in recovery after C-section; RNs do not read strips
- Electronic Fetal Monitoring System: Obix
Shifts & Scheduling
- Shift Times: 06:30-19:00 and 18:30-07:00 (12-hour shifts)
- Weekend Requirement: Every 3rd weekend, possibly up to every other weekend based on unit needs
- Holiday Requirement: 1 major and 1 minor holiday per contract
- Orientation: 2-3 shifts of unit-specific orientation
- Scheduling Type: Not specified if self-scheduling or block scheduling
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Intro to Fetal Monitoring
- Must be able to circulate in the OR
- Competency in normal newborn assessments and routine infant care
- Ability to titrate drips including Pitocin, Magnesium Sulfate, and pain medications
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Must comply with a radius rule: candidate must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity)
- Driver’s license required at submittal to verify distance
- Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove will result in contract termination
- Floating: Occasional float to Postpartum and sitter duties in the hospital
- Scrub color/dress code: Surgical scrubs provided
- Attributes for success: Teamwork, positive attitude, flexibility, eagerness to learn, openness to new challenges
- Return to Office (RTO) required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO approvals
Required Experience & Licensure
