Unit & Patient Population

• Unit Capacity: 36 beds
• Stepdown/PCU patients including:

  • Continuous BiPAP
  • Low-dose vasopressors
  • Trauma patients
  • Lumbar drains
  • CIWA patients on higher doses of Ativan
  • Hyponatremia
  • Emergency dialysis patients
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Antifreeze ingestions
  • Home vents (trachs)
  • Sheath removal
  • CEA (Carotid Endarterectomy)
  • Rhabdomyolysis
  • Precedex infusions
  • Stroke patients with Q2 neuro checks
  • Stable craniotomies
  • Fentanyl drips
• Patient age range: Young Adult through Late Adult (18 - 60+)
• Nurse to patient ratio: 4:1

Staffing

• Core staffing includes RNs, LPNs, Patient Care Technicians (PCTs), Nurse Interns (NIs)
• RN assumes full responsibility for patients on each team
• Variable staffing grid

Required Certifications & Licenses

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – Must be AHA certified
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Must be AHA certified
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Certification
• Current RN license with Nursys verification within 30 days prior to start
• License/Certificate primary source verification within 30 days prior to start

Required Testing & Competencies

• Ascension Color Vision test (updated every 3 years)
• Ascension Core Competencies (HIPAA, Joint Commission NPSG, OSHA topics) – completed within a year of start, updated yearly
• NIH Certification – updated yearly or every 2 years depending on group
• Ascension EKG Exam – passing score of at least 80% required
• Ascension Cerner Test-Out
• Ascension Skills Checklist – clinical skills, updated annually
• 12 Panel Drug Screen – within 30 days prior to start, updated annually
• Fit Test – preferred prior to start, required annually
• Ascension Onboarding Requirements Education Attestation
• Ascension Nursing Contract Worker Onboarding
• Ascension Nova StatStrip training

Health & Immunization Requirements

• MMR: documented proof of two vaccines or positive IGG titer (no declinations accepted)
• Hepatitis B: vaccination series completion or signed declination
• Influenza Vaccine: flu season October 1 through March 31; exemptions accepted with mask requirement
• Positive PPD or IGRA with negative chest X-ray and annual TB questionnaire
• 2 Step PPD or IGRA within 90 days of start
• Varicella: documented proof of two vaccines, immunity, or history (no declinations accepted)
• Tdap: valid within 10 years (no declinations accepted)
• Health Statement or physical exam prior to first assignment, updated annually

Professional Requirements

• Driver’s License/State ID (must be current and valid)
• Resume/Profile submission
• At least two professional references prior to first assignment
• Criminal Background Check including Social Security Trace, Employment Verification, OIG Search, National Sex Offender Registry – updated annually
• Employment Verification for past 7 years – updated annually
• Education Verification relevant to clinical work – within 90 days of start
• Confirmation of Assignment documentation

Additional Notes

• All documentation must be current and compliant with Ascension Health policies
• Some onboarding documents and tests must be completed prior to or on the first day of assignment
• Masking required if influenza vaccine is declined during flu season

This position is ideal for experienced RNs comfortable with a diverse PCU patient population requiring critical care skills and multiple certifications.
