Registered Nurse – Medical-Surgical
Location: Evansville, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Shift: 12-hour nights (6:30 PM – 7:00 AM)
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)
- Overtime: Begins after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts
- Unit: 41 beds
- Patient Ratio:
- Days: 1:5-6
- Nights: 1:6-7
- Unit Culture: Team-oriented with supportive charge nurses and experienced patient care technicians; includes celebrations and a positive environment
- Teaching Hospital: May require precepting students and new hires
Float and Scheduling Requirements
- Float within skillset primarily on the home campus
- Possible float to nearby campuses (8 to 11 miles away) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float
- Mid-shift float within the same campus expected; cross-campus mid-shift float unlikely but possible
- Weekend Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks
- Holiday Requirement: Work every other holiday
- No on-call or call-back required
Patient Population
- Post-surgical patients including Whipple procedures, vascular, bariatric, ENT, podiatry, thyroid surgeries, and open abdominal cases
- Patients with dementia, altered mental status, CIWA/detox protocols, fall risks
- Pre/post heart catheterization patients (femoral/TR bands, no interventions)
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum 2 years of strong Medical-Surgical nursing experience
- At least 1 prior travel assignment required
- Experience in a Level II trauma setting
- Recent EPIC charting experience (checkoff class required)
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills
- Ability to manage change, be resilient, and work hard
- Social and team-oriented demeanor
Clinical Skills
- Peripheral IV insertion
- Chest tube and indwelling drain management
- Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)
- Management of stable drips (heparin, lasix, protonix)
- Epidural management
- Ostomy care
- Blood product administration
- Telemetry interpretation
- Wound care including packing, wound vacs, and dressing changes
Required Certifications and Licenses
- Current active compact Registered Nurse license
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Additional Information
- No local candidates within a 40-mile radius considered
- Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed
- COVID-19 vaccine not currently required (subject to change)
- Orientation includes bi-weekly sessions; guaranteed hours may vary during orientation and holidays when the unit is closed
