Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical Telemetry Float Pool
Location: Centennial, Colorado
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Float pool role covering multiple hospitals within a 60-mile radius of Denver city center (Zone 3).
- Nurses must float throughout the entire zone, which includes various units and specialties.
- No home base facility; housing must allow for floating within the full 60-mile zone.
- Schedule released 4–6 weeks in advance with two possible formats:
- Option A: Scheduled at a single facility for the week, may float within that facility.
- Option B (Just-In-Time): Facility assigned 1–2 hours before shift start via call.
- Night shifts, 12 hours per shift, approximately 48 hours per week.
- Weekend requirement: 6–9 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule.
- Holiday rotation participation may be required.
- Call or standby is rare and only for low census situations.
Units & Patient Population
- Float pool includes Medical-Surgical Telemetry and specialties such as Cardiac, Neuro, Oncology, Rehab, Renal, Bariatrics, Orthopedics, Trauma, and Emergency Department Observation.
- Patient population: Adults to geriatrics with diagnoses including cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, oncology, renal, urology post-surgical, general surgery post-appendectomy, gynecology, psychiatric/detox, ENT, general medicine, and stable long-term patients.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 1:5-6 depending on acuity.
- Charge nurse present on each unit, usually does not take patient assignments except when necessary.
- Nurse aides are available on the units.
- Respiratory therapy equipment such as vents, CPAP, BiPAP is present.
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license valid in Colorado.
- Minimum 2 years of Medical-Surgical Telemetry nursing experience required.
- Prior neuro experience preferred but not mandatory.
- Certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS (AHA), NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
- Experience with heparin drip titration required.
Orientation & Training
- 1–2 days of unit/department-specific orientation with a preceptor.
- Clinicians must be in-state for the week of orientation, even if some modules are completed remotely.
Scheduling & Work Expectations
- Schedule is created by leadership for 6 weeks at a time.
- Flexibility required to fill gaps in permanent scheduling.
- All time-off requests must be submitted before starting the assignment.
- Scrub color/dress code: Any color allowed.
- May be asked to float to other acuity levels including ICU (low acuity holds), PCU/Stepdown, and MS-Tele units.
Additional Notes
- Candidates will interview with the clinical team; no unit manager involvement in the hiring process.
- Must submit a driver’s license (DL).
- Floating assignments and first float location will be communicated by the Monday start date.
