Location

  • City: Silverdale, WA

Unit Details

  • Unit: Birthing Center / Mother Baby
  • Total L&D Beds: 34
  • OR Suites for C-Sections: 2
  • Triage Beds: 2
  • Postpartum Beds: 14
  • Birth Volume: Approximately 150-180 births per month (2,133 deliveries in 2022)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
    • L&D: 1:2
    • Couplets (postpartum): 1:3-4
  • Tele/Monitor Techs available for PACU after C-section
  • Electronic Fetal Monitoring System: Centricity-perinatal

Required Experience & Skills

  • Minimum 2 years L&D RN experience preferred (1 year considered with multiple prior travel assignments)
  • Must have LDRP (Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum) experience
  • Comfortable attending deliveries independently and circulating in C-sections
  • Able to assist with catching and transitioning babies
  • Experience with titrating drips (Magnesium, Pitocin, Insulin)
  • Must be comfortable functioning in postpartum with routine mom and baby competencies
  • No floating outside the department; no floating to NICU

Certifications & Licensure

  • Active WA RN License required (pending license submissions accepted; temp license takes ~4 weeks)
  • Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP
  • Preferred: Intermediate or advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring (FHM)

Staffing & Support

  • Charge Nurse: Free charge on both shifts (does not take patient assignment)
  • Surgical Tech: 1 surgical tech available 24/7
  • Patient Care Assistant with clerical duties on each shift
  • 24/7 in-house OB/GYN hospitalist for triage and emergent cases
  • 24/7 Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) in Nursery
  • 24/7 OB anesthesia provider with call room on unit
  • Respiratory Therapist equipment available (vents, CPAP, BiPAP) typically assigned to family birth

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Contract Length: 13 weeks
  • Block scheduling available upon request
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Days: Sat & Sun; Nights: Fri & Sat)
  • Holiday Requirement: Rotate with permanent staff
  • Call/Standby: When on standby, response time is 45 minutes
  • Orientation:
    • 8 hours compliance with manager
    • 8 hours EPIC training
    • 2-3 twelve-hour shifts for unit-specific orientation

Unit Policies & Environment

  • Surgical Hand Scrub Policy:
    • Remove all jewelry from hands and forearms
    • No artificial nails or enhancements (tips, acrylics, gels, nail art, etc.)
    • Natural fingernails only, clean, well-manicured, no longer than ¼ inch beyond fingertip
    • No open lesions or breaks in skin integrity on cuticles, hands, forearms
  • Scrubs and locker provided
  • Manager is supportive, provides feedback, and expects adaptability to workflows and policies

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Gestational age: 33 weeks and above
  • High-risk patients including:
    • Preeclampsia
    • Diabetes
    • Psychosocial issues
    • Positive illicit substance use

This opportunity is ideal for experienced L&D RNs who are confident in independent delivery attendance, comfortable with C-section circulation, and able to manage high-risk maternal patients in a busy birthing center environment.

Pros

I was on a med onc unit so might be different culture on each unit. Travel friendly. Staff is great. Ratios were 1-5/6. Schedule was flexible. Cost of living depending on neighborhood was also good.
