Medical Surgical Oncology Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Irvine, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36

Job Summary

Seeking a Registered Nurse with oncology experience to provide care in a cancer specialty hospital. The role involves working in a medical-surgical oncology setting with a focus on patients with various types of cancer. Weekend and float shifts are required.

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
• Minimum 3 years of Hematology/Oncology nursing experience, including experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Medical-Surgical nursing experience
• Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

• Biotherapy and active immunotherapy administration (interferons, interleukins)
• Bone marrow administration and stem cell therapies
• Care of patients with brain, ENT, leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, multiple myeloma
• IV therapy and infusion management
• Management of acute tumor lysis syndrome, anaphylaxis, extravasation injury, hemorrhage, sepsis, spinal cord compression
• Pain management, chest tube care, colostomy/ileostomy care, Foley catheter management
• Interpretation of dysrhythmias, isolation precautions, neutropenic precautions
• Phlebotomy, telephone triage, tracheostomy care, wound care
• Advanced directives, hospice care, pediatric team collaboration
• Radiation therapy and symptom management

Required Background and Documentation

• Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
• Background check within 1 year covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years, including Social Security trace, nationwide and county checks, sex offender registry, education verification
• EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
• Education verification and diploma/transcripts
• Primary source verification of RN license (NURSYS verification)
• Annual competency exams and medication/pharmacology test as applicable
• Annual skills checklist

Health and Safety Requirements

• Physical exam within last 12 months
• Negative TB test or chest x-ray as applicable (2-step PPD or equivalent)
• TB questionnaire updated annually
• Immunizations or proof of immunity:

  • Tdap within 10 years or declination form
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B series or positive titer (declination requires proof of non-immune status)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer; declination requires notification and accommodations)
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (deadline November 1)
• Drug screening (10-panel oral drug screen within 1 year)
• Respirator clearance annually (RespSafety virtual questionnaire and clearance letter)
• Fit mask testing (N95) annually; fit testing available onsite except for per diem clinicians

Additional Facility-Specific Requirements

• Review and sign job description acknowledgement form
• Complete health focus and EHS information forms
• COVID-19 booster or declination form if booster not received after September 2023
• Religious and medical exemption forms (time-sensitive, require committee approval)
• Badge photo (passport style with solid background) unless exempted by location
• City of Hope badge provided by agency

• Caribbean blue scrubs required but not provided
• Prior travel experience is not specified as required for this position

This position is ideal for experienced oncology RNs comfortable with chemotherapy administration and complex cancer patient care in a specialized hospital setting during night shifts.
