Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Med/Surg - Correctional)

Location: Chicago, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Position Details

  • Specialty: Registered Nurse, Med/Surg (Correctional Facility)
  • Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 AM - 7:30 PM)
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (2 weekends per month)
  • Call Requirements: None
  • Return to Office (RTO): Maximum 5 days off, no more than 2 consecutive days; no RTO on holidays, day before/after holidays, or weekends
  • Floating: Mandatory float within scope as required by facility
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week

Experience & Certification Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years recent acute care experience in Med/Surg
  • Correctional experience preferred
  • Required Certification: BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Locals accepted, preference for candidates living within 75 miles of the facility
  • Pending licenses are not accepted

Required Documentation & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License/State ID)
  • Social Security Card
  • Background Check (within 12 months, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years, including aliases)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks (within 30 days of start)
  • Physical Exam (within 12 months, signed by PA, NP, DO, or MD)
  • Fit Mask test (N95 or equivalent, within 1 year, annual renewal required)
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccine within 10 years or signed declination
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray (within 12 months, annual updates)
  • Immunizations: Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
  • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination (within 1 year)
  • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (annual updates)
  • Seasonal Flu Vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (required during flu season)
  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (required for starts on/after 4/14/24)
  • Color Blind Testing (required for starts on/after 1/16/24)
  • Competency Exam (required for starts on/after 4/14/24)

Additional Certifications (as applicable)

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – required for certain units
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – preferred/required for some specialties
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure) – required for L&D, NICU
  • NIH Stroke Certification – required for RNs in critical care, ER, Med Surg, NICU, PACU, Pediatrics, Telemetry, and others (effective 10/14/24)

Other Requirements

  • Must complete facility-specific forms and rules of behavior
  • Must comply with mandatory floating policy
  • Must be eligible to work in Illinois healthcare system (no pending licenses)
