Registered Nurse (NICU) - Kansas City, Missouri

Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Details

  • Unit: Level II NICU (5 beds)
  • Patient Population: Neonates 29-34 weeks and >34 weeks gestation
  • Admissions: Infants 34 weeks and above; lower gestational age infants transferred to higher level NICU
  • Ratios: 1 nurse to 2-3 patients
  • Cross-Training:
    • Preferred: Experience with deliveries and 1:1 newborn recovery care
    • Travelers not required to take couplets but experience preferred
    • Floating within scope to well newborn nursery/postpartum expected
  • Special Procedures: Stabilization and transfer of higher acuity or lower gestational age newborns, including:
    • Needle aspiration
    • Chest tube placement
    • UVC/UAC line placement
    • Lumbar puncture
    • Intubation
    • Surfactant administration
    • Resuscitation
    • Initiation of passive cooling

Experience & Requirements

  • Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years
  • First-time Travelers: Not accepted
  • Weekend Requirement:
    • Minimum 4-5 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) per 6-week schedule
    • Minimum 2 Fridays per 6-week schedule
  • On-Call Requirement: 2 mandatory call shifts every 6-week schedule
  • Holiday & Charge RN: Assignments as needed
  • Local Candidates: Not accepted (must live at least 75 miles away)
  • Pending License: Not accepted
  • Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: 7 days
  • Guaranteed Hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AHA or AAP certified (STABLE preferred)

Skills & Competencies

  • Work settings: Mother/Baby, NICU II
  • Patient types: Neonates 29-34 weeks, >34 weeks
  • Clinical skills:
    • Blood glucose monitoring
    • Feedings (bottle, breast, gavage)
    • Isolation precautions
    • IV therapy including Central Line/Implanted Line Care, Umbilical Artery Catheter (UAC), Umbilical Vein Catheter (UVC)
    • Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome care
    • Patient/family teaching
  • Equipment: IV pumps, syringe feeding pumps, phototherapy equipment, incubator/isolette/Omnibed/radiant warmers, neonatal echo available
  • Telehealth support available for neonatologist consultation

Scheduling & Floating

  • No block scheduling accommodation
  • Floating within scope to well newborn nursery/postpartum units

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued ID required
  • Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
  • Various state-specific background checks and registries as applicable
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, must include standard panels and be current throughout assignment
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required and must be renewed annually
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap (or Td for renewal)
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray with yearly questionnaire
    • Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination
    • Flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season
  • Facility-specific documents including HIPAA acknowledgement, confidentiality form, latex allergy questionnaire, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies
  • Completion of facility orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) prior to start
  • Competency exams and skills checklists as required by unit

References & Evaluations

  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred)
  • Performance evaluations may be requested after initial assignment

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with strong neonatal critical care skills, who are comfortable with a fast-paced Level II NICU environment and meet the specified certification and compliance requirements.
