Registered Nurse – Emergency Room (ER)

Location: Santa Rosa, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Work in a 34-bed Emergency Department serving patients of all ages and diagnoses.
  • Facility is a Basic ED Level 3 semi/stroke receiving center (no trauma).
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 4:1.
  • Responsible for assessment, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care in an acute setting.
  • Provide direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care.
  • Deliver holistic and individualized care in assigned area.

Shift Details

  • Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:00 to 6:30).
  • Every other weekend rotation.
  • No on-call requirement.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California.
  • Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC).
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by AHA or ARC.
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year background check required within 6 months of start, including social security trace with all aliases, county searches, nationwide sex offender search, education verification, and FACIS Level 3 screening.
  • Annual updates required for EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG, and FACIS or equivalent screenings.
  • Education verification required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred but not mandatory.
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen within 6 months of start (excluding marijuana/cannabinoids per California law).
  • Full 7 years of work history required on application with no gaps; employment verification up to 7 years required.
  • 2 professional references required within 3 years for clinical positions.

Health and Immunization Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, including clearance for work.
  • Fit mask test within 1 year, renewed annually (specific mask types required).
  • Adult Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap vaccination within 10 years or lifetime TDAP with booster within 10 years.
  • Negative TB test (QGold or TSPOT within 90 days) or 2-step PPD testing with annual renewal.
  • Immunity or vaccination documentation required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B (series or signed declination)
    • Varicella
  • Seasonal flu vaccination required during flu season (Nov 1 – Apr 30) or signed declination with mask-wearing requirement.
  • Color blindness exam if applicable (in-person exam only).
  • Respiratory safety clearance required annually (not required for some allied health roles).

Certifications & Competencies

  • Additional certifications may be required based on position specifics (e.g., Neonatal Resuscitation, Trauma Nursing Core Course, CCRN). Verify with recruiter or manager.
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exams and EKG/dysrhythmia competency exams may be required as applicable.

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • Completion and signing of facility-required documents prior to start, including job description acknowledgment, standards of business conduct, code of conduct, vendor training, and regulatory orientation.
  • TB screening questionnaire signed by candidate and healthcare provider within 90 days of start, renewed annually.
