Registered Nurse - PCU (Night Shift) - Indianapolis, Indiana

Job Type

  • Travel/Contract assignment
  • Contract length: 13 weeks

Work Schedule

  • Night shift: 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:30 AM)
  • Expected to work every other weekend; consecutive weekends may be required based on operational needs

Unit & Patient Acuity

  • Surgical Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with near ICU-level acuity
  • Patient types include ENT (neck dissections, mandibulectomy), thoracic surgery (esophagectomy, lobectomy, pneumonectomy), general surgery (pancreatic, bowel/liver resections), urology (urinary diversions, cystectomies, RPLND), and medical overflow
  • Staffing ratios typically 1 nurse to 3-4 patients

Floating Requirements

  • May be required to float to Med-Surg, PCU, or ICU units
  • Refusal to float may result in contract termination
  • Training and resources provided for floating assignments

Responsibilities & Expectations

  • May be assigned charge nurse duties with provided training
  • Must agree to precepting and/or having students shadow during assignment (teaching facility requirement)
  • Call-in shifts must be made up during the pay period or added to the end of the contract depending on FTE status

Required Experience & Skills

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana
  • Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with at least 1 year within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Proficient in cardiac monitoring (on-unit monitoring)
  • Management of chest tubes
  • Fresh tracheostomy management
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Care of post-operative patients
  • Epidurals management
  • Management of non-titratable cardiac drips
  • IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips
  • Experience with external BiPAP/CPAP
  • Total laryngectomy care
  • Doppler flap checks

Required Certifications

  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association

Licensure

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for Indiana
  • Online license verification required within 30 days before start date

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • Background check within 90 days of start, including 7-year work/living history, SSN trace, county/state/national checks, sex offender registry, and FACIS Level III
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification and transcript/diploma required (official copies)
  • Drug screen: Negative 10-panel drug test within 12 months (includes amphetamines, marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP)
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (N95 or approved respirators)
  • TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year; chest x-ray if positive history
  • Immunizations/vaccinations required or proof of immunity for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption (declinations not accepted)
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Color blind exam (Ishihara or equivalent) with 100% minimum score

Competency & Orientation

  • Unit competency exam required
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required
  • Completion of facility-specific orientation and safety modules prior to start
  • HIPAA acknowledgment required annually

References & Employment History

  • Minimum 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years
  • Employment application covering last 7 years with explanations for gaps over 30 days
  • Skills checklist completed within 12 months and updated annually

Additional Notes

  • First-time travel nurses accepted; local candidates not accepted
  • Indiana RNs are generally not allowed to work at this facility effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS)
  • Valid driver's license or passport required (clear copy)
  • Strict compliance with facility-specific forms and documentation is mandatory prior to start
