Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

Location: Newport News, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Overview

  • Approximately 250-300 deliveries per month
  • 12 labor rooms, 2 operating rooms (ORs)
  • 2 post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) beds
  • 4 antepartum (AP) rooms, 3 obstetric triage (OBT) rooms
  • High-risk patient population

Shift Details

  • Night shift
  • 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM to 7:00 AM)
  • Total 36 hours per week

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience, including experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification or competency

Experience & Travel Requirements

  • 2 years of specialty experience required
  • Prior travel experience not required

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID and valid driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Background check: 7-year criminal history, including all locations lived/worked in past 7 years
  • Drug screen within last 12 months
  • Physical exam within last 12 months
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray per facility protocol
  • Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (series, titer, or declination)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination during flu season (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval)
    • COVID vaccine series preferred; declination form accepted if no vaccine records available
  • Photo for facility badge (recent, professional, per facility guidelines)
  • Confidentiality agreement, dress code, scrub color, safety brochure, drug-free policy, and hand hygiene policy acknowledgments
  • Two professional references required
  • Employment application/resume required
  • Annual skills checklist update required

Additional Notes

  • Locals allowed at the same rate as travelers
  • Fingerprinting requirements updated effective 7/15/2025; Virginia State Police fingerprint results required for behavioral health placements
  • Facility-specific forms and policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start
  • Facility may administer computer-based learning (CBL) tests during orientation; multiple attempts allowed to pass

This position offers an opportunity to work in a high-volume Labor and Delivery unit with a diverse patient population, supporting both routine and high-risk obstetric care.
