Job Summary

Provide safe, competent, quality nursing care to oncology patients based on nursing theory, research, and evidence-based practice within a cancer center setting.


Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Deliver patient care using Relationship Centered Care principles and nursing process.
  • Assess and evaluate patient needs, applying critical thinking in care management.
  • Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to develop, implement, and evaluate care plans.
  • Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, discharge planning, and delegation.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, transitions, health promotion, and disease prevention.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model and allocate resources efficiently.

Patient Experience

  • Model Relationship Centered Care through activities such as Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, Purposeful Hourly Rounding, Medication Review, and Discharge Wrap Up.
  • Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
  • Establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Use evidence-based practices to understand and improve patient perceptions of care.
  • Initiate service recovery and escalate patient/family concerns appropriately.
  • Demonstrate caring, respect, compassion, empathy, and active listening.
  • Support staff in evidence-based practices to enhance patient experience.

Quality and Safety

  • Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers or opportunities for improvement.
  • Demonstrate clinical skills and knowledge essential for quality and safety in oncology nursing.
  • Implement process improvement strategies based on institutional and evidence-based standards.
  • Participate in peer and institutional review processes.
  • Collaborate on quality improvement projects, evidence-based practice activities, and nursing research.
  • Contribute to compliance with quality and safety measures.
  • Apply high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors and maintain a safe environment.
  • Escalate safety hazards or practice gaps following institutional protocols.
  • Document nursing practice using institutional IT systems to support quality and performance improvement.
