Job Description
- Work in an Ortho Neuro Trauma Care Center on a 44-bed unit.
- Shift: 12-hour days, 6:30 AM – 7:00 PM.
- Patient population includes trauma, ortho (e.g., broken hip/femur), and neuro (scheduled neck/back, spine/rib fractures).
- Float requirement: First to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice; mid-shift float within same campus possible.
- Weekend/Holiday requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday.
- No on-call or call-back required.
- Charting: Recent EPIC experience required; checkoff class will be provided.
- Teaching hospital environment; may require precepting students and new hires.
- Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
- Strict attendance policy: 3 call-ins can result in termination.
- COVID-19 vaccine not required (subject to change).
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years as an RN.
- At least 1 full year experience in ortho, neuro, or trauma nursing.
- Prior travel experience: Must have completed at least 1 travel assignment.
- Experience in trauma level II care.
- Current active compact RN license.
- Certifications: AHA BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
- Strong neuro assessment skills, including log rolling patients and applying assistive devices (back brace, immobilizer).
- Telemetry/12-lead EKG interpretation skills (travelers must pass a telemetry test; stepdown experience only).
- PIV insertion skills.
Preferred Skills
- Chest tube and indwelling drain management.
- Management of drips (heparin, lasix, protonix).
- Epidural management.
- PEG/NG tube care.
- Buck’s traction and pin site care.
- On-Q pain pump management.
- CIWA/BH protocol familiarity.
- Wound care including packing and wound vacs.
- Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to manage change well; resilient and hardworking.
- Social and team-oriented attitude.
Additional Information
- Guaranteed 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request). Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
- No local candidates within a 40-mile radius allowed.
- Orientation starts 7/6 with weekly sessions through July.
- GSA hours not guaranteed during orientation week.
- Nurse-to-patient ratio on days: 1:3-5; nights: 1:4-7.
- Night charge nurse takes patients on nights but rarely on days.
- Staff and leadership are supportive of travelers.
- Manager has been on the unit since 2017.
