Job Opportunity: Emergency Department Registered Nurse
Location: Decatur, Illinois
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Specialty: Registered Nurse – Emergency Department (ED RN)
- Shift: 4x12 or 3x12 Night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient Census: Average daily census of 120 patients in a 32-bed ED
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4 for all shifts
- Weekend Work: Required as needed
- On-Call: Not required
- Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
- Block Scheduling: Not accommodated
- Local Candidates: Accepted with no radius restrictions
- Guaranteed Hours: Subject to client call-offs up to 36 hours per 13-week assignment
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Minimum 2 years of Emergency Department (ED) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- Trauma experience
- ACLS issued by American Heart Association
- BLS issued by American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- PALS issued by American Heart Association
- TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Management of patients with multisystem organ dysfunction or failure
- Central line care or management
- Phlebotomy
- Continuous IV paralytics and sedation
- ICP monitoring
- Psychiatric hold management
- Chest tube insertion or management
- Intubation
- Tele Interpretations
Clinical Skills & Experience Requirements
Emergency Department & Trauma
- Experience in a General Emergency Department with combined adult and pediatric patients
- Level II Trauma Center experience preferred
- Cardiac monitoring and emergency response skills including:
- Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
- Multisystem organ dysfunction/failure management
- 12-lead EKG acquisition
IV Therapy & Phlebotomy
- Blood product administration
- Central line care and management
- Phlebotomy and IV starts
Medication Administration
- Continuous IV paralytics and sedation
- Emergency medications
- IV vasopressors
- Procedural sedation
Neurological Cases
- Stroke (CVA) care
- ICP monitoring
- Neuro-trauma, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury
Orthopedic Cases
- Ortho-trauma management
Pediatric Cases
- Abdominal pain, asthma, burns, epiglottitis, head injury
- Hyperglycemia, infection control, mental/behavioral health concerns
- Near drowning, poison ingestion, respiratory infections, seizures
- Sickle cell crisis, skin disorders, spinal cord injury, urinary tract infections
- Identifying and reporting abuse
Psychiatric Cases
- Acute psychosis, drug overdose
- Managing violent behavior
- Psychiatric holds and suicidal patients
Respiratory Cases
- Chest tube insertion and management
- CPAP/BiPAP use
- ABG interpretation
- Intubation and ventilator management
Shock/Trauma Cases
- Gunshot wounds
- Traumatic amputations
Additional Professional Skills
- Isolation precautions
- Triage
- Tele-interpretations
- Ventilator management
Preferred Experience
- Cerner electronic health record system
- Previous charge nurse experience
Facility & Work Environment
- Acute Care Hospital with 280 staffed beds
- Level II Trauma Center
- Uniform scrub color: Royal blue
- Charting system: Cerner
- Parking permit required (no cost)
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including criminal, sex offender, and federal exclusions within 30 days of start
- Primary source verification of licensure and certifications
- Physical exam within one year of start, including labs within 7 days of contract signing
- Fit mask testing required prior to start
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within one year
- Immunizations or documented immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
- 9-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Annual flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required
- Competency exam and skills checklist required
- Professional references (2) required for travel and acute care candidates
- Badge photo required prior to start
Additional Notes
- Fingerprinting must be completed in Illinois 3 business days prior to start for candidates without an Illinois license
- Candidates must be able to work weekends as needed and float within scope
- No on-call shifts required
- RTO (Return to Office) restrictions ideally no more than 5 days
