Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU/PCU Float

Location: Roanoke, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Position Overview

• Float between ICU and PCU units; must be comfortable working in all ICU and PCU units.
• Schedule: 3 shifts of 12 hours each (6:45 PM - 7:15 AM).
• Floating may occur 2-3 times per shift (every 4 hours based on staffing needs).
• Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts in a 6-week block.
• Holiday requirement: Must work one holiday per 13-week contract.
• First-time travelers accepted.
• Pending license accepted only if holding a single-state license from a non-compact state; otherwise, active Virginia State or Compact RN/LPN license required.

Required Certifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

• IV therapy: arterial line management, central/PICC line care, blood product administration, IV initiation & maintenance
• Respiratory support: BiPAP & CPAP management, ventilated patient care
• Medication administration: continuous IV sedation, emergency meds, titration of cardiac & vasoactive drips
• Wound care: surgical wounds with drains or wound vacs
• Cardiac monitoring: dysrhythmia interpretation & management
• Endocrine/metabolic: IV insulin protocol adherence
• ICU experience required
• Experience at a large Level 1 or 2 facility required
• Preferred: 2+ years of experience

Unit Details

• PCU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
• ICU average nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:2

Additional Requirements

• EPIC charting experience required
• Must be able to comply with floating requirements and variable scheduling
• Must work within radius rule (local candidates accepted based on distance criteria)

Background and Health Requirements

• 7-year background check required within 1 year of start
• E-Verify and other federal background checks required and updated with contract renewals
• Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming freedom from communicable diseases
• Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year, updated annually
• Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
• Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually
• Immunizations or positive titers required for:

  • Rubeola (Measles)
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella
• Flu vaccination or declination form required during flu season

Documentation and Compliance

• I9 or attestation required
• Valid Driver’s License/State ID required within 48 hours of signing (must meet radius criteria)
• Education verification of highest earned degree required
• State license primary source verification within 30 days of start
• NURSYS verification required for all RNs within 30 days of start
• Completion of facility-specific compliance and orientation paperwork prior to start
• Photo for badge required (professional photo with plain background)
• References: 2 clinical references or hospital evaluations required
• Skills checklist updated annually

• Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
• Floating assignments require flexibility and comfort working across multiple critical care units.
• This position is at a Magnet-designated Level I Trauma Center with advanced specialty care.
