Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position

Location: Leonardtown, Maryland

Job Description

  • Unit: Intermediate Care (IMC)
  • Shift: 36 hours per week, 12-hour night shifts
  • Patient-to-Nurse Ratio: 1:4-6
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in IMC, including charge nurse experience
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Weekend Requirement: Even/Odd weekend coverage as directed by unit operational needs

Required Skills and Experience

  • Charge nurse experience
  • Management of chest tubes, PCA infusions, bedside monitoring
  • Experience with non-titratable drips and IV infusions
  • Patient diagnoses commonly encountered:
    • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
    • Diabetes
    • COPD/Asthma
    • Sepsis
    • Pneumothorax
    • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)/Dialysis
    • Hypertension/Hypotension
    • Alcohol withdrawal
    • General surgery post-op care

Certification Requirements

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Must pass the Relias EKG Rhythm Interpretation Exam with:
    • Minimum overall score of 80%
    • 100% score on lethal rhythms section

Uniform

  • Scrubs color: Caribbean blue (not provided)

Vaccination Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required (or approved medical/religious exemption)
  • COVID-19 vaccination strongly recommended; declination requires mask-wearing during patient encounters

Compliance and Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Criminal background check within 90 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
  • Federal, state, and county searches as applicable
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks prior to start and monthly thereafter
  • Education verification for highest degree required by position

Health and Safety

  • Annual physical exam confirming ability to work without accommodations and free from communicable disease
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes
  • Drug screen within 90 days of start (excluding marijuana), updated annually
  • N95 fit test within 9 months of start, updated annually (client may complete onsite)
  • Required immunizations or titers:
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years preferred)
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (2 MMR vaccines or positive titer)
    • Hepatitis B (titer, series, or signed declination)
    • Varicella (2 vaccines or positive titer)

Competency Exams

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (score ≥ 80%) within 3 years of start
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam (Relias Dysrhythmia Basics A) within 1 year of start, updated annually, with required scores as above
  • Color blindness testing (online or in-person)
  • General competency exam (score ≥ 80%) within 3 years of start

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid state nursing license required prior to start
  • Other certifications as required by unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, EFM) depending on assignment

Additional Information

  • Two positive supervisory references required, including one from the most recent assignment, supporting at least 2 years of experience within the last 3 years
  • Complete 7 years of work history with no gaps, including education, employment, licenses, and contact information
  • Skills checklist required prior to start and updated annually
  • Facility-specific orientation modules must be completed before hire date

Important Notes

  • Facility requires all employees to have the flu vaccine unless an exemption is approved
  • Candidates must be prepared to complete required competency exams and certifications as part of onboarding
  • Scrubs are not provided; Caribbean blue color required
  • Weekend coverage is assigned based on unit needs

This position is ideal for experienced RNs with IMC and charge nurse experience who meet the certification and competency requirements and are comfortable working night shifts in a fast-paced hospital environment.
