Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: New Brunswick, New Jersey
Facility Level: Level IV NICU (accepts Level III NICU travelers)
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Must have availability for half of the winter holidays.
  • Patient Ratios:
    • NICU: 1:2
    • SCN: 1:3/4
  • RN must have 2+ years of current Level III NICU experience.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Schedule: Every other weekend and holiday. No block scheduling.
  • Required certifications: BLS, NRP (PALS preferred).
  • Floating assignments to NBN, SCN, Pediatrics, and PICU as appropriate.
  • Patient mix: 21-bed NICU and 16-bed SCN. Will not attend high-risk deliveries.
  • Required skills and experience with:
    • EPIC electronic health record system
    • Respiratory support: CPAP, HFNC, ETT, Oscillators, Jet ventilation
    • Glucose monitoring and insulin administration
    • Breastfeeding support and feedings
    • Placement/management of oral/nasogastric/nasojejunal tubes
    • Sepsis workups
    • Vascular access: UAC/UVC, arterial lines, central lines
    • IV vasopressor administration
    • Criticool and transport experience preferred
  • Locals accepted.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support): AHA required; RQI and instructor cards acceptable.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program): AHA required; COCs accepted as placeholders. Required for NICU, L&D, Mother-Baby, Nursery, Antepartum, and Special Care Nursery.
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support): Preferred but not required for NICU; required for ED, Outpatient Surgery, PACU, PICU, and Pediatrics.
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support): Not required for NICU.
  • Chemotherapy Certification: Not applicable for this role.
  • Other: Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) required for ER, Peds ER, and Behavioral Health RNs (not applicable here).

Required Competencies and Exams

  • Medication Test/Pharmacology Competency Exam (within 12 months of start).
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam (as applicable).
  • Color Blind Testing (within 1 year of start).
  • Pass/Fail Testing (EKG/Medication) with remediation policy.

Background and Compliance Requirements

  • Criminal Background Check within 30 days of start, including alias and multi-level searches.
  • Employment Application or Resume with 7 years of work history.
  • Work History Verification (minimum 1 year prior to start, with gaps ≤30 days).
  • References: 2 references within last 2 years, including at least one managerial reference.
  • State-specific exclusions list check (New Jersey Department of Treasury).

Health and Safety Requirements

  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within required timeframes.
  • Physical exam within 12 months, cleared to perform essential job functions and free of communicable disease.
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start (10-panel urine screen).
  • Seasonal influenza vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required annually.
  • Fit test and respiratory medical clearance as applicable.
  • Immunizations or immunity proof required for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (within 10 years)
  • Latex allergy screening questionnaire if applicable.

Facility Specific Requirements

  • Must complete floating policy acknowledgment for every new assignment.
  • Annual education sign-off and safety manual acknowledgment required.
  • Completion of vendor medical clearance form if history of positive TB.
  • Required to complete annual OSHA, HIPAA, and Joint Commission training.
  • Must review and sign elder abuse education attestation (patient-facing roles).

Additional Notes

  • No block scheduling; every other weekend and holiday coverage required.
  • Facility uses EPIC system.
  • Travelers must bring physical exam and respiratory clearance documents on first day for onsite fit testing.
  • Locals are accepted for this travel/contract role.
  • First-time travelers are welcome.

This position is ideal for experienced NICU RNs with strong neonatal critical care skills, who are comfortable with a dynamic patient mix and floating to related units. Compliance with extensive credentialing, health, and background requirements is mandatory.
