Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical Neuro (Travel/Contract)

Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36


Unit & Patient Population

  • Mixed Acuity: Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Stepdown care levels
  • 48-bed unit specializing in Neurology and Neurosurgery
  • Patient conditions include strokes, aneurysms, seizures, spinal fusions, brain and spinal cord tumors, and other neurological disorders
  • Eight beds equipped for long-term EEG monitoring
  • Multi-care level unit; nurses may care for up to six Med Surg patients simultaneously

Staffing Ratios

  • Medical Surgical/Telemetry: 1:5 (day), 1:6 (night), occasionally 1:7 (rare)
  • Stepdown: 1:3-4 (day and night)

Job Requirements & Responsibilities

  • Must be prepared to float frequently across multiple units to meet staffing needs, including potential float to a nearby campus
  • Drip medication administration required on all floors
  • EPIC electronic charting experience required
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays during the contract
  • Weekend shifts: 4 weekend shifts out of 8 possible in a 4-week period (days: Sat/Sun; nights: Fri/Sat nights)
  • Facility is 100% nicotine-free
  • Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 100 miles from the facility
  • Pending license accepted if in hand at time of submission; otherwise, booking delayed by six weeks
  • Scrubs are mandatory (specific color and branding required)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Nebraska
  • Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
  • Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment
  • Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current NRP certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Experience with EPIC electronic health record system

Compliance & Documentation

  • Government-issued photo ID required
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including multi-county and federal checks
  • Ongoing monthly SAM and OIG checks required
  • Education verification required
  • State-specific abuse/neglect registry check required within 30 days of start
  • Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification required
  • Annual physical exam and fit mask test required
  • Immunizations and health screenings required:
    • Tdap within last 10 years
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray with TB questionnaire if positive history
    • 2 MMR vaccines or positive titers (boosters if needed)
    • Hepatitis B titer or declination
    • 2 Varicella vaccines or positive titer (boosters if needed)
    • Drug screen within 60 days of start and annually thereafter
    • Flu vaccine preferred but not mandatory; documentation or declination required
    • COVID vaccine preferred; medical/religious exemptions accepted
  • Annual skills checklist required
  • Two professional references from the past 2 years required

Additional Information

  • Up to two weeks of Return to Origin (RTO) time permitted, with manager approval for additional requests
  • Parking permits available for a monthly fee or daily parking options
  • Orientation Safety Manual acknowledgment required
  • Eye exam required only for OR staff (not applicable here)
