OR Certified First Assistants - West Virginia (Martinsburg)

Position Overview

• Specialty: OR Certified First Assistants
• Location: Martinsburg, West Virginia
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Unit: Operating Room (Cost Center 72)
• OR Suites: 14 main suites
• Average Cases per Day: 28 cases/day plus 5 add-ons (including same-day surgery cases)
• EMR System: EPIC

Required Certifications

• BLS (AHA)
• Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) via NBSTSA
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) via NBSTSA
• Must be a graduate of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical Assistant program
• RN's require BLS, ACLS, & PALS (for reference)
• ABSA certification not accepted (as of 10/29/2025)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of experience in the specialty (OR Certified First Assistant)
• Must have completed 2-3 previous travel assignments (prior travel experience required)
• Orthopedic and Neurosurgery experience preferred
• Must be proficient with assisting in orthopedic cases

Work Environment & Staffing

• OR staffing ratio: 1:1
• Charge nurse available 7am - 7pm, can assist with circulating cases if needed
• OR techs available
• Respiratory Therapist (RT) in-house 24/7, manages ventilated patients in OR and PACU
• Pharmacy available 24/7 with Omnicell system

Call Requirements

• Weekend and weeknight call rotations required
• Call shifts:

  • 1 x 12-hour shift per week (weeknights)
  • 1 x 24-hour call shift per month on weekends (can be split into 2 x 12-hour shifts)
• Weekday call hours: 7pm-7am or 7pm-11pm
• Weekend call hours vary: 7am-7pm, 7pm-7am, 7pm-11pm, or 7am-7am
• Call response time: 20 minutes (if >20 minutes away, must stay on site while on call)
• Holiday call coverage as needed

Shifts

• 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts available
• Varied start times, primarily day and evening shifts
• No self-scheduling for travelers, but block scheduling may be allowed if it meets unit needs

Orientation & Training

• Floor-specific orientation: 3 shifts

Common Case Types

• All surgical cases except open heart
• High volume of neuro spine, total joints, open fractures
• General surgery, ENT
• Vascular cases expected starting August

Additional Notes

• Scrubs provided for RNs and OR techs
• RN scrubbing is a plus but not required
• No floating required
• Techs responsible for room turnover (no aides or housekeeping support)
• Typical OR coverage: 7-8 ORs running simultaneously with 2 techs per RN
• Float to outpatient surgery as needed
• Weekend call shifts can last 12-24 hours due to two teams on call

Summary:
This position is ideal for an experienced OR Certified First Assistant with at least 1 year of specialty experience and prior travel assignments. Strong orthopedic proficiency is preferred. The role involves varied shifts, weekend and weeknight call rotations, and working in a busy OR environment with a wide range of surgical cases.
