- Department: Cardio Thoracic
- Number of Beds: 70
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Days: 1:4-5
- Nights: 1:5-6
- Patient Types / Common Diagnoses:
- Myocardial Infarction (MI)
- Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
- Atrial Fibrillation (A fib)
- COPD
- Pacemaker/AICD placement
- Various lung surgeries (including chest tubes, esophagectomy - not fresh from PACU)
- General medical overflow
Required Certifications & Skills
- RN licensure
- BLS (AHA) required
- ACLS recommended
- EKG interpretation required
- Medication titration skills required (mainly Cardizem and heparin drips)
- Basic nursing skills
- RN required to titrate drips
Staffing & Support
- Charge Nurse: 24/7 coverage, rarely takes patient assignments
- House Supervisor: 24/7 coverage
- Patient Care Techs (PCT) Ratios:
- Days: 1:8-9
- Evenings: 1:9-10
- Nights: 1:10-12
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment: CPAP, BiPAP (used if part of patient’s home regimen), heated high flow (special COVID cases)
- Tele/Monitor Techs present; nurses must read and interpret telemetry strips (Phillips monitors)
Scheduling & Work Hours
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Day Shift: 07:00 - 19:30
- Night Shift: 19:00 - 07:30
- Weekend Requirements: Every other weekend
- Days: Saturday/Sunday
- Nights: Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday
- Holiday Requirements: Rotating schedule
- Days: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day
- Nights: Memorial Day Eve, July 3rd, Labor Day Eve, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve
- No call or standby requirement currently
- Floating: Required to float to other general medical units
Orientation & Dress Code
- Orientation: Typically 1 shift or part of one; may vary if previously worked at this facility
- Scrub Color: Any color except children/cartoon prints (adult unit)
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required for all panels
