Registered Nurse – Neuro MedSurg (6 West)

Location: Morgantown, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week

Unit Overview

• Unit: 6 West – Neuro
• Beds: 20 total (14 on the floor)
• Patient Ratios: 1:5-6 for floor patients
• Nurse Aide Support: Yes, 3 per shift with ratios of 1:7-10
• Telemetry: Yes, monitor techs read strips; RNs verify and document in Epic but do not interpret strips
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7; floor vents managed by RT and physicians; RN vent experience not required
• Charge Nurse: Available 24/7

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Neurosciences patients including Deep Brain Stimulator (DBS) cases
• Stroke and Seizure patients
• Surgical/Post-Op Spine patients
• Various neurological disorders

Required Certifications & Skills

• BLS (AHA) certification required
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required and must be in hand at time of submission
• ACLS preferred but not mandatory
• Recent Epic experience required
• Strong overall neuro nursing experience required, including proficiency with G-tubes

Clinical Practice Notes

• Drip titration is generally done only by physician orders in step-down settings; some protocols may allow RN titration with education
• Common drips encountered: Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, Insulin
• RNs do not need to interpret telemetry strips but must confirm monitor tech readings in Epic

Scheduling & Work Expectations

• Weekend shifts required:

  • Weekend day positions: Friday, Saturday, Sunday
  • Weekend night positions: Friday-Sunday or Saturday-Monday
• Weekday night shifts include every other weekend or 3 weekend shifts per schedule
• Holiday shifts are part of the rotation and travelers are expected to participate
• Flexibility required; up to 3 consecutive shifts may be allowed but not guaranteed
• Possible floating to other units (7E, 7W, 7NE, 10E) as first priority, then hospital-wide if needed

Orientation & Dress Code

• Unit-specific orientation: 1 shift on the unit (12-hour night shift)
• Dress code: Any combination of white and royal blue

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license
• Minimum 6 years of neuro med-surg nursing experience (based on specialty "6W Neuro MedSurg - 40")
• NIHSS certification in hand at time of application
• Recent Epic experience
• BLS certification required; ACLS preferred

• This unit is not a step-down unit; step-down RN experience is not required
• Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
