Job Summary

Under general direction, the Operating Room Technician observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety, conserves OR supplies, and operates as a team member of the OR staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Follow Infection Control policies and demonstrate expertise in surgical scrub technique.
• Adhere to sterile technique principles preoperatively and intra-operatively.
• Assist the surgeon with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing instruments during procedures.
• Anticipate surgeon’s needs for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
• Maintain an organized operative field and keep instruments clean and properly placed.
• Keep accurate counts of sponges, tapes, needles, dissectors, and instruments.
• Prepare for cases by assembling supplies and equipment per preference cards; identify conflicts or problems.
• Care for instruments and supplies after each case.
• Provide a safe surgical environment by identifying potential hazards and assisting in preoperative equipment checks.
• Display knowledge of potential hazards (equipment, chemical, gases) in the OR.
• Utilize experienced OR staff as a resource and assist new OR personnel.
• Assist in suturing, retracting, suctioning under surgeon’s direction.
• Handle and identify specimens according to policy.
• Expedite efficient OR turnover between cases.
• Take rotating call duty.
• Perform additional responsibilities as requested.

Required Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from NBSTSA.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross).

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous Operating Room experience.
• Previous Surgical Technologist experience.
