Job Summary

The Pediatric ICU Clinical Nurse provides safe, competent, quality care to critically ill pediatric patients using evidence-based nursing practices. The role involves assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care

• Deliver patient care based on nursing theory, research, and organizational standards.
• Assess and evaluate patient needs using critical thinking.
• Integrate assessment and intervention skills in nursing care delivery.
• Collaborate with healthcare team to develop and evaluate care plans.
• Prioritize patient care activities including teaching, rounding, coaching, and discharge planning.
• Educate patients and caregivers on care plans, health promotion, and disease prevention.
• Communicate professionally with patients, families, and care team members.
• Manage assignments within a Modified Primary Nursing care delivery model.

Patient Experience

• Role model relationship-centered care practices such as bedside shift reports, purposeful rounding, and discharge wrap-up.
• Respect patient values, preferences, cultural diversity, and expressed needs.
• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
• Use evidence-based practices to understand patient perceptions of care.
• Address patient and family concerns and escalate as needed.
• Demonstrate empathy, respect, and active listening.

Quality and Safety

• Practice safe, patient-centered care and identify barriers to quality.
• Demonstrate clinical skills essential to patient safety.
• Participate in quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives.
• Engage in peer and institutional review processes.
• Follow high reliability principles to avoid high-risk behaviors.
• Escalate safety hazards according to protocol.
• Document nursing practice using institutional IT systems to support quality initiatives.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Current Registered Nurse license in New York State.
• Minimum 1 year pediatric ICU/critical care nursing experience required.
• Pediatric critical care clinical competence.
• BLS and PALS certification required.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to assess patient status visually, physically, auditorily, and cognitively.
• Physical ability to walk, stand, lift, stoop, push, and respond quickly for extended periods.
• Manual dexterity for clinical procedures (e.g., venipuncture, catheterization, CPR).
• Proficient in electronic medical record documentation and basic data entry.
• Ability to read, write, understand, and speak English clearly.
• Physical and mental health to care for acutely ill pediatric patients with diverse diagnoses and behaviors.
