Job Summary
The Surgical Technician assists the healthcare team during the intra-operative period by preparing and handling surgical instruments and equipment, and assisting the surgeon throughout procedures. This role requires knowledge of various surgical specialties and the ability to prioritize and problem-solve in urgent or emergency situations. The technician must apply aseptic technique and have basic knowledge of medical terminology and the metric system, providing care appropriate to patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics.
Responsibilities
- Maintain aseptic technique during surgical duties to ensure positive patient outcomes.
- Care for, prepare, handle, and maintain surgical instrumentation.
- Perform sponge, sharps, and instrument counts consistently according to policy.
- Adhere to professional standards of practice.
Required Qualifications
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) with a minimum of 2 years of experience, including experience within the last year.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Knowledge and experience in surgical technology.
Skills
- Surgical technology and instrumentation handling.
- Surgical equipment preparation.
- Aseptic technique.
- Medical terminology and metric system knowledge.
- Patient care, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
Shift Details
- Day shift: 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM
- 12-hour shifts, approximately 36 hours per week
- No weekends required
- Call up to 40 hours on a 6-week schedule
No prior travel experience required.

Poor staffing, floating to other units sometimes all three shifts, little support from management. The AMN (Charge) is responsible for 59 patient rooms, which could be 118 patients. Resources are stretched too thin.
