Registered Nurse – Step Down Unit

Location: Newburgh, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour Days (6:30 AM – 7:00 PM)
Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week (48 hours accepted upon request)

Job Description

• Work on a 16-bed Step Down Unit with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-4 during days.
• Float requirements include first to float within skillset to nearby campuses (8-11 miles away) with 2-hour notice for cross-campus float. Mid-shift float within the same campus is expected; cross-campus mid-shift float is rare but possible.
• Weekend/Holiday Requirement: Work three weekends every six weeks and every other holiday.
• No on-call or call-back required.
• May be required to precept students and new hires in this teaching hospital environment.
• Scrub color: Navy blue; no competing health system or agency logos allowed.
• Attendance is critical; 3 call-ins can result in termination.

Patient Population

• Cardiac patients (post catheterization, stents/interventions, pacemakers)
• CIWA/BH (withdrawal/behavioral health)
• Sepsis, DKA, CVA (stroke)
• CPAP patients, feeding tubes, craniotomy post-op day 2
• GI bleeds, hypothermia (bear hugger warming)

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Indiana
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1 year of Step Down Unit experience within the last year
• Completion of at least 1 prior travel assignment
• Experience in a Level II trauma center
• Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
• Recent experience with Epic electronic health record system
• Ability to pass Telemetry (Tele)/12-lead EKG interpretation tests
• Ability to initiate and titrate drips (antiarrhythmics, Heparin, Insulin, etc.)

Preferred Skills

• Experience with stable home ventilators, PleurX/pericardial drains, lumbar drains, VP shunts, and Narcan drips.
• Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
• Resilient, adaptable to change, and socially engaging.

Additional Information

• Orientation occurs bi-weekly starting 8/10.
• Overtime applies after 52 hours on 48-hour contracts.
• COVID-19 vaccine is not currently required but subject to change.
• Guaranteed set hours per week except during holidays when the unit may be closed.
