Medical Surgical Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Rio Rancho, New Mexico
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Overview
- Specialty: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse
- Shift: Night (4 shifts per week, 12 hours each; 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient Ratio: 1:6
- Typical Patient Diagnoses: CHF exacerbation, pneumonia, cellulitis, alcohol withdrawal, fractures with surgical intervention, small bowel obstruction, pancreatitis, infections requiring Infectious Disease consult, sepsis, CVA, cardiac events, hemodialysis issues, altered mental status, urinary tract infections, post-surgical care including total joint replacements, gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, TURP, panniculectomy
- Unit Care Requirements: Med/Surg care including colostomy, feeding tube management, blood product administration, central and peripheral line care, phlebotomy, PICC line management, IV starts, heparin administration, trauma and ortho care, surgical drains, respiratory support (CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, oxygen masks, portable oxygen), tracheostomy management, oral suctioning, isolation precautions
- No titrating drips except Heparin
- Equipment: Wound vacs, kangaroo pump
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in New Mexico
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Medical Surgical nursing experience, with experience within the last year
- ACLS certification
- BLS certification issued by American Red Cross or American Heart Association
Work Environment & Additional Details
- Facility Type: Community-based hospital, Level III Trauma Center, Level I Teaching facility
- Beds: 65 inpatient, 12 ICU
- Charting System: Cerner
- Parking: Free
- Scheduling: Weekend shifts may be required depending on census and staffing; no block scheduling accommodations
- Floating: Floating within scope of practice to meet facility needs is expected
- Locals: Candidates living within 100 miles are not accepted
- Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: Time off greater than 7 days requires approval
- Overtime: Allowed after 48 hours per contract rules effective 10/30/2025
- Contract Extensions: New contracts and extensions must be at least 10 weeks
- Traveler Break Policy: A 6-month break is required after 4 consecutive assignments or 1 year of travel work, whichever comes first

- First-time travel nurses are accepted for this position
- On-call duties are not required
