Job Opportunity: PCU Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Position Details
- Shift: Night, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 - 7:15)
- Hours per week: 48
- Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5; may flex to 1:6 occasionally (travelers expected to take extra patients)
- Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Floating: Regular floating within scope to other departments, units, or facilities as needed
- Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts in a 6-week schedule period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination)
- Holiday and Charge RN shifts: May be required as needed
- Local Candidates: Not accepted; home address must be at least 75 miles from facility
- First-time Travelers: Not accepted
- On-call: Not required
- Block Schedule Accommodation: Not available
- Return to Office (RTO) Restrictions: No more than 7 days off
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 2 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Experience in telemetry and MS/Tele work settings
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring and telemetry, including dysrhythmia interpretation
- Skilled in IV therapy including IV insulin protocols
- Central line and PICC line care and management
- Competent in respiratory care including chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac) and non-invasive airway management
- Wound care experience including use of wound vac
Preferred Skills (Not Required)
- Experience in cardiac telemetry and ER holding areas
- Management of dysrhythmias and use of rapid response teams
- Gastrointestinal feeding tube care
- Renal failure management
- Neurological care including CVA (stroke)
- Orthopedic trauma and total joint replacements
- Surgical drains (plastics)
- Tracheostomy management
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued ID (Driver’s License or State ID)
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree (no pending at start)
- NURSYS license verification for Missouri RN license
- Unit-specific competency exams including dysrhythmia/EKG competency (minimum 80% pass rate)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam (minimum 80% pass rate)
- Color blindness testing within 12 months of start
- Skills checklist specific to unit within 1 year of start
- Employment application and professional references (2 required, supervisors preferred)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, covering a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Annual fit mask (N95) testing and compliance with facial hair policy
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap vaccine or declination (required every 10 years)
- Negative TB screening (2-step PPD or equivalent within 1 year) or chest x-ray if history positive
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season (Sept-April)
- Facility-specific documents including:
- HIPAA acknowledgment
- Latex allergy questionnaire
- Confidentiality form
- Regulatory compliance education (annual quiz with 80% passing score)
- Hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policy acknowledgments
- Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
- Missouri Family Care Safety Registry (FCSR) and Highway Patrol checks as applicable
