Job Overview
- Unit: Neuro Critical Care Unit (24-bed ICU)
- Patient Population: Neurosurgery, neurology, stroke, otolaryngology, oral maxillofacial surgery (OMFS)
- Common Conditions Treated:
- Thrombectomies
- Post-operative craniotomies for brain tumors
- Cerebral aneurysms
- Intracranial hemorrhage/hematomas
- Severe head/spinal cord injuries
- Increased intracranial pressure
- Free flap care and assessment
- Doppler usage
- Tracheostomy care/management
- Traumatic brain injuries (TBI)
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Status Epilepticus
- Guillain-Barre syndrome
Requirements
- Specialty: Registered Nurse - Neuro Critical Care
- Years of Experience: Minimum 2 years in specialty
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
- First Timers: Accepted
- Ratios: 1:2 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Weekends: Every other weekend required
- Call: None
- Float: Yes, if low census
- Certifications Required:
- ACLS (AHA only, no certificates of completion accepted)
- BLS (AHA only, no certificates of completion accepted)
- NIHSS preferred
- EPIC experience: Required
Preferred Experience & Skills
- Experience in otolaryngology, oral maxillofacial, neurology, or stroke nursing care
- Stroke care, thrombectomies, SAH precautions
- EVD ventricle care
- Sedation management and drip titration
- ICU experience
- Experience with medications such as:
- 23.4% NaCl, 3% NaCl
- Mannitol
- Hypertonics
- Paralytics
- Propofol
- Sedation
Orientation & Testing
- Pass/fail testing on EKG and medication competency upon arrival
- Facility-specific orientation paperwork required within 3 weeks of start date
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Background checks including 7-year history, EPLS/GSA/SAM, HHS/OIG
- Government-issued photo ID
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, updated annually
- Fit mask test within 1 year (N95 or equivalent)
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year (annual TB questionnaire if past positive)
- Immunizations or titers for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer, series, or declination)
- Varicella
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (instant drug screen not accepted)
- Flu vaccination required year-round with strict deadlines; no exemptions allowed
- Professional references: 2 recent verified from managers/supervisors (charge RN references not accepted)
Additional Notes
- Float pool participation may be required if census is low
- No call responsibilities
- Every other weekend work required
- Must maintain valid state nursing license and NURSYS verification
- Must complete facility-specific confidentiality, code of conduct, conflict of interest, sexual harassment, and cornerstone module attestations prior to start
