Registered Nurse (PICU) - New Haven, Connecticut

Employment Type: Per Diem
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7:00 AM - 7:30 PM


Job Description

Seeking experienced PICU Registered Nurses for day shifts. This role requires floating and working in a Level I Trauma, teaching hospital environment.


Experience Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of PICU experience (highest required)
  • Teaching hospital experience
  • Trauma Level I experience

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active nursing license
  • Required: BLS, PALS (front and signed back)
  • Preferred: ACLS
  • Additional certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., NRP, NALS for neonatal/pediatric units)

Skills & Competencies Required

  • Telemetry (on-unit and remote monitoring)
  • NG tube insertion/management
  • Isolation precautions
  • Administration of blood and blood products
  • Arterial line management
  • Central line blood draws and care (including PICC lines)
  • Phlebotomy
  • IV insertion and maintenance
  • TPN/Lipids management
  • Pediatric dosage calculations and use of Broselow system
  • ICP monitoring and post-neurosurgery care
  • Care of ventilated patients, including ventilator management and end-tidal CO2 monitoring
  • Suctioning (ETT, NT)
  • Tracheostomy care
  • Urinary catheter insertion/management
  • Infection control and PPE use
  • Vaccine administration
  • Wound assessment and care

Preferred Skills

  • Accessing/managing ports
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Continuous sedation
  • IV vasopressors
  • Assisting/managing intubation
  • BiPAP/CPAP
  • Care and maintenance of acute airway
  • High Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)

Orientation

  • 2-3 days total:
    • Virtual orientation (Friday)
    • In-person orientation (Monday)
    • Epic training (Wednesday) with test-out option for experienced users

Systems Used

  • Charting: Epic
  • Medication dispensing: Pyxis

Additional Requirements

  • Must commit to working at least 4 shifts per month
  • Must prioritize compliance and complete all onboarding requirements before start
  • 2 clinical references required, including at least 1 leadership reference from the past year
  • Background check: 7-year criminal history including sex offender registry
  • Physical exam within 12 months prior to start
  • Respiratory fit test required
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within the past year
  • Immunization or immunity documentation required for: Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B, Varicella
  • 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
  • Flu vaccination or documented declination required during flu season
  • COVID-19 vaccination is not required for this position; flu declinations accepted

  • 1-year separation period required for previous permanent employees
  • Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this role
