Registered Nurse (Neuro Med-Surg Acute) - Illinois

Unit Details
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Unit size: 54 beds (mostly semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Patient types: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read their own strips
- Respiratory equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
- Support staff: Patient care techs/nurse aides present with ratios ~1:9-12 depending on shift
- Charge nurse and house supervisor present 24/7; charge nurse generally does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
Schedule
- Shift: Nights
- Shift length: 12 hours
- Hours per week: 36
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday requirement: Every other holiday
- No call or standby requirement
- Floating: Participates in float rotation; when floated outside general unit, only assigned tasks within competency and paired with trained nurse
Orientation
- 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- 12 non-billable orientation hours
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Illinois
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Minimum 1 year of Med Surg / Telemetry experience, with Med Surg / Telemetry experience within the last year
- One completed travel nursing assignment
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
- Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
- Neuro ICU experience
- Experience titrating heparin drip based on PTT
Clinical Responsibilities
- RNs required to titrate drips (e.g., heparin)
- Must be able to manage neuro-specific patient care and common diagnoses listed above
Dress Code & Policies
- No specific scrub color required
- Tattoos must be covered on duty
- Only ear piercings allowed
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required
Licensing
- Active Illinois RN license required or proof that application process has been initiated
Additional Notes
- Orientation hours do not count toward guaranteed hours
- Call-off policy allows 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty
